Married At First Sight UK featured another new couple on Tuesday 8 October, but fans watching the show are not convinced the series’ experts have made a good match, describing the pair’s first meeting on their wedding day as “awkward.” Former semi professional footballer turned binman Ryan was matched with Glasgow make up artist Sionainn, but on first meeting, she decided he looked like the type of “pretty boy” immature man she wanted to avoid, not marry.

As she reached the altar wearing a mini dress and giant bow in her hair, Sionainn turned to her assembled family and friends and asked “What am I doing, guys?” During her voiceover, she said: “I'm feeling dead overwhelmed. I'm scared and want to run away. I feel like this is a massive mistake." Ryan, meanwhile, who has a six year old son named Leo, looked concerned as Sionainn hesitated over her vows, but relaxed a little after she said “I do.”

MAFS fans were quick to comment on the couple’s uncomfortable first interactions. ”Well this is an awkward and dry wedding,” wrote one viewer, while a second asked: “Have we got a runner?” and a third added: "This is the most awkward MAFS wedding EVER." A few noted that Sionainn had judged Ryan based on his looks, with one saying: “Why are they all judging Ryan, he seems so sweet,” and another adding: “Sionainn being that judgemental of Ryan, on first sight, is very odd. She needs some soul-searching therapy, not to marry a stranger.” A third wrote: “She is already judging the book by its cover. Hmm. Ryan didn’t ask to be a pretty lad,” while a fourth said: “This reaction is so strong, he’s not even said anything yet.”

Happily, the couple relaxed a little at their wedding reception, and Ryan revealed to Sionainn – who lost her father to cancer – that he had twice been diagnosed with bladder cancer since 2017. His opening up to her softened her view of him, and by the end of the evening the couple appeared to be getting on much better, although Sionainn saying “I will put you through your paces” to her new groom during a cosy chat did have some on social media saying “run, Ryan, run!” and “that’s not what you want to hear from your new bride.”

Other couples didn’t seem to be faring quite so well by the end of the same episode, as original groom Caspar got a grilling about his “I don’t usually go for curvy girls” comment from bride Sarah’s friends, while Ross was put through his paces at the gym by Sasha’s extremely protective dad. “Poor Ross,” commented one viewer. “I’d be genuinely terrified if he was my father-in-law.”
