Come autumn/winter, Marks & Spencer always nails it in the coats department, dropping plenty of classic styles that feel both timeless and contemporary. But this year, the high-street hero has arguably made the coat of the season, judging by how many times we've seen it on fashion influencers this month.

The Checked Longline Trench Coat, £109, is still available in a few sizes, with more popping in and out of stock due to returns (if yours is already gone, pop your email in to be the first to know if it comes back).

Exactly the kind of heritage-inspired style that would slot naturally into Claudia Winkleman's covetable The Traitors wardrobe, the in-demand coat is made with wool for an elevated, cosy feel. Its longline silhouette adds modern elegance, given flattering shape by a belt at the waist, while side pockets offer practicality for stashing your essentials on wintry walks.

If you're lucky enough to get your hands on The Coat, there are myriad ways to style it. Our favourite? Over a red jumper, or with a red scarf, for that on-trend pop of colour. It'll go with everything, but would also look particularly chic with expensive-looking burgundy, the shade of the moment. Or, as modelled below by body-positive influencer Stephanie Yeboah, both!

Our fashion editor, Jodie Dunworth, is firmly on board with the Balmoral look, including heritage coats in her recent roundup of the key coat trends to know now. So, if you haven't got yours yet, you know what to do...
