  • On Reddit, a man is venting frustrations over his wife's choice in birthday gift

  • The poster says he frequently tells his wife what he wants for his birthday and holidays, and she doesn't listen, instead making him gifts

  • For a recent birthday, he sent her a direct link to a book he wanted; when she didn't buy it, he spoke up

A man is soliciting "outside opinions" after sharing that his wife gifted him homemade bookmarks — and he told her he didn't want them.

The man shares his story in an anonymous post on Reddit, writing that his wife's homemade gifts have been "an ongoing issue that I have talked to her multiple times about."

"My wife makes less money than me and is the type of [person] who prefers to make her own gifts for people," he writes. "The issue is she will do this even if the person doesn't want this. I will use myself as an example. For the past few years she has made every single gift I have been given."

The man adds that, "no matter what" he asks for, he instead receives a homemade gift – even if the homemade gift is more expensive than the gift he wanted.

"Doesn't matter if it is cheap or not. Last Christmas I asked for a few things and I got a homemade scarf," he writes.

Cut to his birthday, and he asked for a $25 book, even sending his wife a link.

"I opened the gift and she made some homemade bookmarks. It wasn't even the type of bookmarks I like. They were made from fabric and I like the wooden ones," he adds.

He continues: "I must have made a face because she asked what was wrong. I told her I didn't want these. I made it so clear what I actually wanted and I have talked to her so many times. I handed them back and went out to buy the book."

When the man got back from the bookstore, the two "had a big fight," with his wife calling him "ungrateful and a jerk." Now the man wants to know: who's in the wrong?

Commenters on Reddit have largely sided with the husband, with one writing, "She is a horrible gift giver period."

Others question why the wife didn't just give her husband both the book he wanted and a handmade bookmark, while some say the gift felt "intentionally mean."

"Not only is it NOT what they wanted, its also a direct reminder that they knew what you wanted and chose not to get you it. Especially if its affordable and has been talked about," another writes.
