Kate Moss just proved that the floral dress isn't dead after all

Over the summer, we asked whether the floral dress was dead, after the once ubiquitous staple seemed to have fallen out of favour with the fashion set. Our conclusion was that, while many of us have been leaning more towards separates of late, there's still a place for this most feminine of styles if you can successfully bring it into the modern day. And now, Kate Moss has confirmed that opinion, putting a fresh twist on a floral dress after her debut appearance in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Kate's beautiful dress nods to two of this season's biggest trends: sheer and lace. The muted colour palette of red, orange and cream flowers on a wintry black base feels perfect for autumn days, with the semi-sheer fabric adding a sexy, 'indie sleaze' edge that feels very her. Then, you've got the vampy black lace skirt starting at the front of the dress, just above the knees. She's even thrown a tuxedo jacket with a boho-esque raw-edge hem over the top, which helps her outfit feel even more of the moment.

Of course, nailing this aesthetic comes naturally for Kate, as the model was the poster girl for the look during its heyday in the early Noughties. She finished her ensemble off with satin heeled boots, a matching black bag with a braided handle (another nod to boho), and silver drop earrings.

If you still love a floral dress but need some guidance on how to wear it in 2024, consider either following in Kate's footsteps with a vintage-inspired style (make Rixo and Doen your first ports of call) or looking to the bolder, more abstract prints in stores that have taken their lead from the runways. Ruffled styles, too, encapsulate that free-spirited boho vibe, and make lovely choices for winter weddings.

'It’s not really a case of florals being in or out,' says our fashion director, Oonagh Brennan. 'It’s the way you wear them and how you accessorise that brings a contemporary edge. Choose structured, figure-skimming silhouettes and sharp accessories: a cool clutch for evening, say. Right now, I'm taking inspiration from Erdem – the ultimate in fashion florals – and going for wallpaper vintage-print floral dresses; my latest obsession is with a rose pink and red colour palette.'

Our editor-in-chief, Sarah Tomczak, meanwhile, has been gravitating towards simpler, more pared-back designs. That said, she still loves a 'more subtle floral...maybe it's not an all-over print, or the colours are a bit more muted'.
