Jennifer Lopez opens up about life after Ben Affleck split
Jennifer Lopez has opened up for the first time since her split from Ben Affleck, sharing that her "whole f--king world exploded" during a year which saw her marriage end.
Speaking to American comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, Lopez explained that she has been looking inwards and learning to feel comfortable with herself.
"The work is figuring yourself out," Lopez shared. "It’s looking back at the feelings underneath and the belief systems that we have about ourselves that make us make certain choices and create certain patterns in our life. And so, when you get to a point where you think that you’ve learned the lessons, and then it blows up in your face again, you realize, “Okay, I haven’t, so what is it that I need to look at right now?” I would say, never stop looking inward, because it’s so easy to blame everybody else."
Lopez added: "But you have to be healthy. You have to be complete, if you want something that’s more complete. You have to be good on your own. I thought I learned that, but I didn’t. And then, this summer, I had to be like, 'I need to go off and be on my own. I want to prove to myself that I can do that.'"
Without referring to Affleck directly, Lopez said that while she hasn't got "everything figured out," she's "excited" about her future. "Being in a relationship doesn’t define me. I can’t be looking for happiness in other people. I have to have happiness within myself. I used to say I’m a happy person, but was still looking for something for somebody else to fill, and it’s just like, “No, I’m actually good."
It was confirmed that Lopez and Affleck were splitting after two years of marriage when Lopez filed for divorce in August. Their romance first began in 2003, but the relationship was called off a year later. They were reunited almost two decades later and got engaged in April 2022.
Earlier this year, amid speculation around her marriage to Affleck, Lopez called off her North American tour, telling fans: "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down."
As for the future? Lopez is embracing single life. "I’m not looking for anybody, because everything that I’ve done over the past 25, 30 years, being in these different challenging situations, what can I f--king do when it’s just me flying on my own?... What if I’m just free?"
