Gwyneth Paltrow frees grey roots and wears semi-sheer dress at Golden Globes

Gwyneth Paltrow sported her grey roots with pride at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

The 47-year-old wore her blonde hair parted in the middle with silver-flecked roots on show for the prestigious red carpet event in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Proving grey roots are far from frumpy, the entrepreneur and actor opted for a semi-sheer dress, wearing a sheer brown Fendi outfit that left little to the imagination.

A Bvlgari diamond necklace styled, unusually, underneath the dress completed the look.

Paltrow has spoken in the past about her grey hair.

Back in 2016, she told US publication People: “Of course I have wrinkles [and] grey hair. But I genuinely love it. This is who I am.”

However, this is the actor first time she has rocked visibly greying locks in public.

Grey hair has enjoyed a change in perception in recent years. Formerly, it has had a negative connotation in the western world.

“Grey hair was typically considered undesirable for women as it was a clear and unavoidable signifier of age,” says Rachael Gibson, a freelance hair editor who goes by the handle @thehairhistorian on Instagram, told Yahoo UK last year.

However, grey hair – both as a result of hair dye and natural greying – has grown in popularity.

“This is part of the larger trend of diversity and acceptance, and the idea that we're slowly coming towards that people should feel happy and confident to be themselves, regardless of size, skin colour and hair colour,” added Gibson.

In part, this is down to the influence of high-profile grey-haired celebrities rebranding the look, including Jamie Lee Curtis, 60; Diane Keaton, 73; and Helen Mirren, 74. Paltrow is adding to the increasing number of women sporting their grey hair with pride, while Christine Brinkley, 65, is another recent addition to the silver-haired tribe.

Some choose to eschew hair dye for health reasons – such as Keanu Reeves’ girlfriend Alexandra Grant, who recently highlighted the link between permanent hair dye and breast cancer to her followers.

Actor Jennifer Aniston, 50, declared in a recent interview that she would not be going grey, telling InStyle she would never quit her monthly dye appointments: “I’m not gonna lie — I don’t want grey hair,” she said.

Many of us choose to cover our greys, with the UK boasting Europe’s largest hair colourant industry, valued at an estimated £317 million in 2017, according to Mintel figures.
