Green tea KitKat fans rejoice – the Japanese favourite is coming to the UK
The green tea flavoured KitKat is the Holy Grail of confectionary.
A two finger bar about half the length of your bog standard KitKat, this white chocolate treat – which has just a hint of woody, matcha flavour – has a strong cult following.
But while we’re used to mint, caramel, chocolate orange, and even dark chocolate KitKats in the UK, the green variety has historically proved far more difficult to get hold of.
It was previously exclusive to the select few who have recently travelled to Japan (or who are curious enough to incur a sky high shipping charge online).
But now the exotic treat is now coming to the UK.
KitKat manufacturers Nestle are launching the green tea KitKat in eight European countries including Germany, the UK, Italy and Switzerland, according to Bloomberg.
The KitKat, which is made with imported green-tea matcha powder with cocoa butter and white chocolate, will be made at Nestle’s factory in Hamburg.
Initially, it will only brought out on a trial basis. But, fingers crossed, the variety – which is the most popular in Japan, according to Euromonitor International – will curry enough favour among Brits to stay for good.
Green tea KitKats aren’t the only niche variety available to buy in Japan.
Tourists travelling to the country can also expect to find cinnamon, sweet potato, wasabi (yeuch!), strawberry cheesecake and fruit parfait varieties, along with many, many more.
