Gemstone hair is the latest in hair colour trend
Peering into an amethyst geode is a lot like looking into a kaleidoscope - celestial plum fades to starry-night navy and back again. And of course, that sparkle.
Kinda stunning, right? All colours considered, it makes sense that geodes have inspired the latest in rainbow hair trends. Hair colourists (or should we say geologists) are weaving amethyst and deep blue hues into their client's manes. They're some pretty lucky women: Walk into the salon a diamond in the rough and walk out looking like a shiny, new gemstone. That's always the goal, right?
Cherin Choi, a Los-Angeles-based colourist and pioneer of the gemstone hair movement told Refinery 29 her secrets to achieving the look. She starts by lightening the hair's base from the bottom-up, avoiding the roots - the more soft root, the better. After that, "the lightened hair is lifted to a pale yellow, then is toned to a blondish white," she explained. When the hair is dry, "the amethyst purple is applied on the mid sections, then the moonstone blue onto the very tips."
It might seem like witchcraft, but Choi has a trick: "I use a brush and emulsify with my hands to blend the colours," she said.
Okay, so the trend does have mortal roots (pun intended), but it's best leaving this one to the pros. As for the intensity of the colour, that's up to you. Since no two geodes are the same, no rules apply.
Consider replacing navy with a pale turquoise...
...or go for a vibrant magenta.
If you're not looking to commit, opt for concentrating the colour around the tips. You can just snip them off when you're ready to try something new again.
