Everything we know about the royal wedding reception: From who will perform to what the guests will eat

The royal wedding is nearly upon us, and while we know tons about the finer details of the big day already – from the flowers to the music and who will be attending – there’s still a lot to be guessed about the evening reception.

On the day there will be two receptions: a formal ‘wedding breakfast’, which will place immediately after the ceremony at Windsor Castle, and in the evening, a smaller reception for the couple’s close friends and family, held at Frogmore House.

While the couple want to make the public as integral a part of the occasion as they can – with invites sent to over 1200 members of the public and information on the procession route readily available for people heading to Windsor – the reception will be a far more intimate setting, reserved for the closest in Harry and Meghan’s inner circle.

Who will perform?

While the music for the ceremony has been confirmed and includes gospel choirs and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the reception is likely to invite a less formal, pop act.

Nothing has been confirmed yet but rumours are swirling about who is in the running to bag the coveted spot on stage.

Among the names is Elton John, a close friend of Harry’s mother Princess Diana, who will be attending the nuptials.

Adele, Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding (who performed at Harry’s brother The Duke of Cambridge’s wedding reception in 2011 and is a good friend of Prince Harry) are other acts tipped to perform, while others suspect the Spice Girls could reunite for the special gig.

What will the guests eat?

While it’ll be picnics for the members of the public attending the wedding, reception guests are likely to get fine dining.

According to the Telegraph, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have their wedding reception catered by Table Talk, which boasts “sensational food” at “bespoke events.”

It’s also the same company who catered the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for their 2011 nuptials and by Pippa Middleton’s in 2017, both attended by Harry who was clearly impresses by the food.

As for the cake, Kensington Palace revealed that Harry and Meghan have chosen a lemon and elderflower number covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers, which will be made by London pastry chef Claire Ptak, for their upcoming nuptials.

And not forgetting the booze: wedding planning website and app Bridebook.co.uk have predicted there will be 16,000 glasses of champagne served at the wedding.

Who will be making speeches?

In a move that breaks tradition, Meghan Markle is rumoured to be giving a speech at her own wedding reception, according to the Evening Standard.

Apparently, the bride-to-be is planning an “affectionate tribute” to Harry and she will reportedly be thanking the Queen and her friends and family when she takes the mic.

Meghan’s father Thomas J Markle, who is walking her down the aisle at St George’s Chapel, won’t be making a speech on the day.

And of course there’s the traditional best man’s speech, which will be delivered by best man and the groom’s brother The Duke of Cambridge.

Though nothing has been revealed about the content of the speech, Prince William has hinted it’ll be his chance for revenge.

After the news was revealed Harry had chosen his brother to be his best man, Prince William said it “feels great” and that “revenge is sweet.”

Harry, who acted as best man during Prince William’s 2011 nuptials, reportedly delivered a best man’s speech full of embarrassing jokes, as is customary.

Will Meghan change into a second dress?

It’s been reported that Meghan Markle will be having a second dress for the evening’s events.

According to Vanity Fair, the Duchess-in-waiting will don a traditional gown for the ceremony held at before slipping into something more fashion-forward for the evening’s celebrations at Frogmore House.

A royal source told the publication: “She will have two dresses, one for the ceremony and another dress for the evening. The plan is for her to change after the ceremony so she can party the night away in something less restrictive. Meghan can’t wait to surprise everyone, especially Harry.”

It makes sense considering Meghan’s wedding gown is likely to have some gravitas, meaning might not be the most practical attire for a night of dancing and socialising.

Future sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, also donned two Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen numbers at her 2011 nuptials.

Where will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spend the night?

So where will the married couple be crashing (when they’re no doubt exhausted) following the most important day of their lives?

The royal newlyweds will be spending their first night as husband and wife at Windsor Castle.

When the party ends, the couple will jump in a car and make the short half-a-mile drive from Frogmore House to their lodgings in the castle.
