Escape To The Country couple in tears after being forced to restart search for dream home

Escape To The Country host Ginny Buckley was tasked with helping couple Debs and Colin from Surrey find their dream home on Tuesday's show.

It was revealed that Debs and Colin had lived in Caterham, Surrey, for 29 years and in their current home for 17 so they were well and truly ready to escape to the country. With a budget of £500,000, the duo were looking for a character property with three bedrooms, travel links to London and a workshop option.

However, the couple had previously experienced heartbreak when attempting to find their dream home seven years ago. Host, Ginny, explained: "Debs and Colin were on the verge of buying their dream home seven years ago when the sale fell through just as Colin's London-based work restoring antique furniture increased."

Debs recalled: "One minute we were doing it, we were even packed up and then the rug was pulled from under our feet!" Seven years later, the couple were ready to start their house hunt again and Debs broke down into tears as she viewed their first home.

Host Ginny quipped "better late than never", adding: "It must have been so frustrating getting so close to making this move then having to put the blocks on it." The presenter then showed the couple a stunning thatched cottage in Forncett End, Norfolk, which was priced at £500,000 and boasted three bedrooms, a detached workshop and two reception rooms.

Upon seeing the home, Debs said: "It's beautiful, it's really pretty, I love it. Oh, it's making me a bit... cry..." as she got emotional. Ginny was quick to comfort Debs and asked why she was emotional to which she admitted: "I don't know, it's just making me a bit emotional it's so pretty, so pretty!"

The couple were also taken later in the show by the mystery home, which was priced between £460,000 to £485,000, boasting period reception rooms, three bedrooms and a private woodland.

At the end of the episode, the couple revealed that they loved the first property and mystery house. However, they admitted that their first step was to put their own home on the market.

As the credits rolled, Escape To The Country issued an update as it was revealed that Debs and Colin had accepted a lower offer on their own property back in Surrey and were in the process of buying a property in a Norfolk village close to Diss.

Escape To The Country continues on weekdays at 3pm on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
