Elderly couple who have wed after 42-year relationship reveal secret to long relationship
Jim Hawkins, 81, and his partner Lynne, 64, are proof that there’s never a need to rush into marriage.
The two went on their first date together in 1980, after meeting in their hometown of Bourton-on-the-Water, where they both lived on the same street.
They later moved to Fairview, Cheltenham where they raised their son, James.
And after 42 years together, the couple finally said “I do” in a care home earlier this month – decades after Lynne first popped the question.
So what’s the secret to their long relationship? “Friendship, through thick and thin," says Lynne.
The couple, who are both battling their own health problems, were ecstatic to finally wed.
“I’m ready, and I’m getting on a bit!” said Jim, who is now in a care home where he is struggling with dementia.
Lynne, who is currently fighting cancer, said it’s a special moment for them both.
“It means the world to us both to finally be married for our remaining time together.”
The two kept their ceremony small, and followed it with a party at home, to celebrate their long-lasting relationship.
And to their surprise, St John Care Trust Grevill House even had their in-house catering team make a wedding cake to celebrate the big day.
“It has been an absolute privilege to support Lynne and Jim with the plans for their wedding day,” said Su Helen, Home Manager at St John Care Trust Grevill House.
“Everyone here is thrilled to see this declaration of their love and affection for each other. Even in the later stage in life, love and romance can thrive,” she shared.
