New vehicle ramming incident frays nerves in China
STORY: A driver in an SUV plowed into students and pedestrians outside a school in southern China on Tuesday. State media said the incident occurred in Changde city in Hunan province.Video shows a white SUV near a primary school, with several people on the ground. A man is surrounded by a crowd and apparently beaten. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, or whether it was intentional. Reports said several were injured in the incident, though a detailed tally was not available - and it’s frayed nerves in a country horrified by a spate of violent deaths. It comes just a week after a driver crashed his car into a crowd at a sports centre in Zhuhai in southern China. It was the deadliest mass attack in the country in a decade, killing 35 and severely injuring 43 more. Days later, a former student went on a stabbing rampage at vocational college in the east of the country, killing eight. The incidents have spurred concern over whether rising social pressures are a factor, and whether China has the mental health resources available to deal with it. There has also been anger over the government’s apparent moves to limit reporting on what happened.In a social media post, one expert pointed to a common thread to recent events. He said they featured disadvantaged people who felt they had been unfairly treated and have no way to be heard. The post was soon removed by censors. Last week's car attack prompted President Xi Jinping to intervene, urging police to do better at identifying people at risk of lashing out.

Britain's domestic energy price cap is expected to inch up by 1% in January, with geopolitical tensions and weather disruptions keeping wholesale energy prices high, analysts at Cornwall Insight said on Monday.
