With most crocks, you put softened butter in the top portion, pour some water in the base, and place the top on the base. From there, you have to keep track of when you need to replace the water every couple of days, and the result is perfectly spreadable butter. (No more melting it in the microwave or puncturing your bread by trying to spread too-solid butter.)
