As the UK continues to face a cost of living crisis, the thought of splashing out on food for this year's Christmas dinner could be daunting for some.

However, one woman has revealed how she created a five-course Christmas dinner menu for 10 people totalling less than £50.

Jenna Burr, 31, says she felt inspired to create the multi-course meal after discussing financial challenges with her friends and family.

She explains that she bought all of the ingredients for the meal, which includes mulled wine, from her local Tesco and has made it so others can replicate it easily.

The five-course meal includes a salmon lattice starter, a roast dinner with all the trimmings, a cheese platter, two different pudding options and petit fours.

These petit fours include a pack of 12 mince pies that Burr bought for £2.18, and chocolate-dipped clementines for £1.22. She also bought a £3.50 bottle of mulled wine spritz to accompany the meal.

The main part of the meal consisted of a £6 turkey centrepiece which was made using thigh joints, a stuffed chicken, sausage and bacon parcels, and sage and onion stuffing in the shape of Christmas trees.

Burr spent less than £6 on both desserts, an ice cream “bomb” and a Christmas pudding with custard.

The cheese platter cost £6.30 and she spent just under £5 on vegetables including green beans, broccoli, carrots, parsnips and Brussels sprouts.

“I wanted to show that you can have a really luxurious Christmas day feast for the whole family without needing to invest in any specialist equipment or ingredients,” Burr explains.

“It’s not always helpful when recipes require expensive ingredients or items from multiple shops as that can be a real barrier to creating something everyone can make and enjoy.

“I appreciate how utterly exhausting it can be having to plan meals on a tight budget so hopefully I can take some of the stress away and leave people more time to do what matters most – enjoy themselves!”

Burr initially posted the video explaining the food budget on Facebook, and later to TikTok. The video has amassed a combined 120,000 views.

“I started this to help out a friend but it’s spread so much further – I’m so happy that it’s been useful to so many people,” Burr enthuses . “Knowing that this has been helpful has been so uplifting.”
