Best mince pies: Where to buy yours this Christmas
There’s nothing quite like a mince pie when it comes to signifying the start of Christmas.
Synonymous with cosy nights in and festive jingles, we look forward to eating these crumbly, sweet pies all year round.
So, it’s only natural we want the best of the best, when it comes to our chosen mince pie variety – but navigating the annual offering can be a minefield.
With everywhere from Waitrose to Aldi stocking their own take on the spiced delight, it’s hard to sort the ‘naughty’ from the ‘nice’.
That’s why we’ve gone and done the hard work for you, compiling a comprehensive guide to nine different varieties on offer this Christmas.
Iceland Luxury Mince Pies (£1.89 for 6) – 4.5/5
These slightly boozy Iceland mince pies were declared the winning kind. The office favourite, these cakes were said to be “delicious” and “sweet without being sickly” with a “delicious filling”.
Marks & Spencer Mince Pies (£2.50 for 6) – 4/5
These varieties were a popular choice in the office, with one person declaring they were “sticking with these all season”. Many praised the ratio of mince meat to pastry, while others loved the fruity taste of the filling.
Aldi Specially Selected Classic Mince Pies (£2.99 for 4) – 3.5/5
The pies received a fairly warm reception from the Yahoo UK team, thanks to their “crumbly, buttery” pastry and “nice but not too sweet” filling.
Mr Kipling Deep Filled Mince Pies (£1.55 for 6 from Waitrose & Partners) – 3.5/5
While Mr. Kipling is more commonly known for Bakewell slices, these mince pies went down a treat too. One taster said they were “Christmas in a pie”, while other compliments included “delicious”, “crumbly” and “nice pastry”.
Morrisons All Butter Deep Filled Mince Pies (£2.00 for 6) – 3.5/5
These were divisive – while some declared them “brand”, others thought the pastry and filling was perfectly balanced. At a reasonable price point, these are certainly worth a go.
Heston From Waitrose Chocolate and Sour Cherry Crumble Mince Pies (£3.00 for 6) – 3/5
Heston Blumenthal polarised the office with his non-traditional chocolate and cherry mince pies. While one person declared them delicious and scored them 5/5, others grumbled that they were “not real mince pies”.
Greggs Sweet Mince Pies (50p each or £1.75 for 6) – 3/5
These had the second lowest price point of the bunch, and – while not a favourite – these “crumbly” and “well spiced” pies were certainly appreciated.
Asda Extra Special Luxury All Butter Mince Pies (£1.50 for 6) – 2/5
It looks like Asda failed to hit the mark with its mince pies this Christmas season, with tasters complaining these pies were too sweet and had a bad pastry configuration (too thick on the top, while too thin on the sides).
Walkers Luxury Mince Pies (£3.30 for 6) – 1.5/5
It was a no from the Yahoo UK team on these, sadly. While the filling was said to be “generous”, it was said these had “weird pastry” and clashing textures.
