Megan Rapinoe: "We don't know how to quit"

USA captain Megan Rapinoe was full of compliments for the effort from her teammates after they beat the Netherlands to win the Women’s World Cup and retain their title.

The 34-year-old scored the opening goal of the game from the penalty spot after Alex Morgan was fouled in the penalty area, and then the resulting kick put her ahead of Morgan as the top scorer of the tournament. She was awarded with the golden boot after the game.

Speaking after the match, Rapinoe described the effort the entire USA squad put in to winning the tournament for the fourth time.

Rapinoe explained: “It’s an unbelievable feeling, all of the people in our group put in so much work, obviously the players, we have all our friends and family here and it is surreal, it’s ridiculous.”

Rapinoe continued: “We are crazy, that is what makes us special, we have no quit in us, we will do anything to win.”

Before the game, the experienced midfielder called on younger members of the squad to step up in the final, and 24-year old Rose Lavelle drove home the second goal of the game. Rapinoe was pleased the Washington Spirit midfielder could make an impact.

Rapinoe said: “That was what she has been missing, that little bit all tournament, she’s so dangerous, she has opened up everything for us and she has got her reward tonight on the biggest stage. I am so proud of her, she’s a superstar, not even in the making, just a straight up superstar.”

USA head coach Jill Ellis second Rapinoe’s comments regarding the USA players efforts throughout the tournament. the 52-year-old explained: “This is an amazing group of players but an even better group of people. They have just fantastic resilience, chemistry, they put their heart and soul into this journey and I can’t thank them enough, it has been fantastic.

“I said to them, they’re unbelievable, enjoy it, congratulations, you’ve made history.”
