Liverpool made it three wins from three at the start of its Champions League campaign with victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.

Darwin Nunez scored the only goal of the game for the Reds but it was one of his teammates who was a surprising choice for the Player of the Match award.

Arne Slot's men had already beaten AC Milan and Bologna in the new league phase and were made to work for all three points in Germany. Nunez prodded home from Mohamed Salah's header before goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a string of fine saves to keep the home side at bay.

Yet according to UEFA, it was left-back Kostas Tsimikas who was deserving of recognition for his performance. The Greek international was handed a rare start by Slot, coming in for Robertson. He was involved in the opening goal as his cross found the head of Salah, before Nunez finished.

While Tsimikas didn't put a foot wrong, he was hardly the standout performer and was replaced by Robertson for the final 15 minutes as Liverpool saw the game out. Unsurprisingly, supporters were left puzzled by the choice.

One fan asked: "Wait, did they get the wrong player?" Another fan added: "Kelleher is robbed!" Those sentiments were echoed by another Liverpool fan who watched the game, who wrote on social media: "Can't think of anything he did in that game that was worthy of a MOTM award."

The prize is given out by UEFA's Technical Observer Panel, who explained the decision. A post on the UEFA website read: "He showed great positional sense and was involved in major scoring opportunities as well as the cross to help set up the winner.

"The full-back was always available in build-up play, made clever tactical movements and constantly worked hard."

Robertson will hope to win back his place when Liverpool takes on Arsenal in a huge clash at the top of the Premier League on Sunday. Looking ahead to the match, Slot said: "We know how tough of an opponent Arsenal is, especially in their own stadium.

"We faced them in the pre-season, when both teams didn't have their whole squads. Mikel has done an amazing job over the last few years. We know, like against Chelsea and today, we will have to be on top of our game to get a result."
