England's possible route to the World Cup Final
England might have lost 1-0 to Belgium in their final Group G match at the World Cup but they could still end up winning the tournament. Maybe.
Both teams fielded squad players galore in that tepid Kaliningrad encounter with victory apparently the last thing on their minds as they sought to avoid top spot and a much harder passage to the World Cup Final itself.

But while England fans celebrated finishing second best and avoiding potential knockout clashes against the likes of Brazil, Argentina, France and Portugal, attention turned to who they ARE playing and could face in the latter stages.
Round of 16
England face Colombia in Moscow on Tuesday having never lost to the South Americans in five previous encounters, England having won three times.
They met in the 1998 World Cup when goals from Darren Anderton and David Beckham earned Glenn Hoddle’s side a 2-0 victory.
Colombia started their World Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Japan and had Carlos Sanchez sent off after just six minutes.
But they rallied to win Group H with victories over Poland (3-0) and Senegal (1-0).
Star man James Rodriquez is a doubt for the England clash after going off injured against Senegal but striker Radamel Falcao will be desperate to prove to England fans that his unsuccessful spells at Manchester United and Chelsea were blips in a glittering career.
Quarter-finals
Assuming Gareth Southgate’s men beat Colombia, the next test is a last-eight clash against Sweden or Switzerland.

The Swedes won Group F despite losing to a last-gasp Germany goal but progressed after a 3-0 defeat of Mexico and a 1-0 victory against South Korea.
At 24th, they are 12 places behind England in the world rankings and this is their first World Cup since 2006 when they drew 2-2 with England (Joe Cole’s wondergoal, etc).
Switzerland, the world’s sixth best team according to the FIFA rankings, finished second in Group E to qualify for the last 16 for the third time in the past four World Cups.
They drew with Brazil in their opening game before beating Serbia then drawing with Costa Rica.
Semi-finals
So let’s assume that England have negotiated their way to the last four for the first time since 1990.
Who awaits now?
Spain might have won Group B but their only win was 1-0 against Iran and they face hosts Russia in the last 16. The winners of that tie will be up against either Croatia or Denmark.
The Croats won Group D with three victories while Denmark’s only win in the group stage was 1-0 against Peru.
Best case scenario: Russia beat Spain, Denmark beat Croatia, then Denmark see off Russia in the quarter-finals and face England.
Worst case scenario: Croatia continue to show their amazing form and come up against England for their first semi-final since finishing third in 1998.
So to summarise…
Last 16: England v Colombia
Quarter-finals: England v Switzerland/Sweden
Semi-finals: England v Croatia/Spain/Denmark/Russia
