Arsenal vs Bayern Munich LIVE: Champions League result and final score as Bukayo Saka denied late penalty
Arsenal salvaged a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich as Leandro Trossard grabbed a late equaliser after Harry Kane threatened to spoil the party in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta’s side will head to Munich next week with the tie in the balance after a thrilling contest, as Arsenal showed resilience to earn a draw after trailing at the break to Kane’s penalty.
The former Tottenham striker returned to haunt Arsenal once again as Kane became the leading scorer against Gunners at the Emirates - although the England captain was perhaps fortunate to escape a red card for an elbow on Gabriel.
Arsenal had made the perfect start to their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010 as Bukayo Saka whipped a wonderful finish into the corner, but Serge Gnabry then returned to the Emirates to strike against his former team.
Kane then converted from the spot after Leroy Sane was brought down in the box, before Trossard fired Arsenal level in the second half after a magic dribble from Gabriel Jesus.
And there was late drama at the end as Saka was brought down in the box by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with Arsenal’s appeals waved away by the referee.

Arsenal’s Champions League lesson reveals true Bayern Munich quality
22:12 , Chris Wilson
It was expected to be a great statement from Arsenal, but then it could have been so much worse. The important point is they are alive in the quarter-final after a pulsating 2-2 quarter-final first leg, where the very spirit of the Champions League seemed to bring so much more out of Bayern Munich.
Harry Kane even scored the penalty that made it 2-1 and put Arsenal on the brink, only for Mikel Arteta’s side to rally superbly with an exacting Leandro Trossard finish.
This was probably the main lesson from the game, that is as important to the second leg in Munich as the aggregate score.
It showed the value of experience at this kind of level, but also how you start to develop it.

Arsenal denied ‘clear’ penalty against Bayern Munich as Mikel Arteta says crucial ‘moment’ missed

The incident was checked at by VAR but Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg was not instructed to look at his pitchside monitor.

More from Tuchel
22:58 , Chris Wilson
Adding to his comments on the penalty, Tuchel says that tonight was “tough work, [a] tough game against a very strong opponent with a fantastic crowd today”.
“The atmosphere was amazing for the home team.
“We stepped up after 1-0 down, very good reaction. In general a very good team effort. We hit the post.
““We were relentless and kept on believing and kept fighting. Everything is open now.”
Tuchel speaks to TNT
22:55 , Chris Wilson
Bayern managers Thomas Tuchel is in front of the cameras now, and he claims that the referee admitted to him that he should have given a penalty for an incident in which Gabriel picked up the ball from a goal kick!
It happened in the 66th minute. Raya seems to have taken the goal kick by passing it to Gabriel, but the Brazilian stopped the ball with his hands as if to take a free-kick!
Tuchel says that he thinks that “the referee did not have the courage to give a deserved penalty, in a bit of a crazy and awkward situation”.
“He admitted that he knows about the mistake the player made. That is a bit frustrating.”
Arteta speaks to TNT
22:40 , Chris Wilson
Mikel Arteta is the first manager to speak to TNT.
He says that Arsenal “started really well, we were dominant”, but that Bayern’s goal “created some uncertainty”.
“We scored a really good goal and after that is the moment of the game when Ben [White] is in front of [Manuel] Neuer and if it was 2-0 it would have been a very different game.
“The second goal was unusual for us to concede but it is the Champions League, you make a mistake and get punished.
“Even at 2-1 we tried to make a rhythm, we were composed and didn’t try to rush things and the changes had an impact on the game.
“In the Champions League you give something they will take it. You get punished. That is part of football as well. The things we can control is do the simple things better.”
“I have a lot of belief we can go there and beat them.”
On the penalty decision, he said: “They said they checked it and decided it was not a penalty.”

Rio Ferdinand and Martin Keown are adamant that the challenge from Neuer at the end was a penalty. Not entirely sure what game they were watching.
Saka appears to almost throw his leg into Neuer’s – two feet off the ground before the contact is even made.
Kane speaks to TNT
22:28 , Chris Wilson
Unsurprisingly, out of Bayern’s players it’s Kane who comes to speak to TNT.
He says that he thinks Arsenal fans have a soft respect for him.
“It was a tough game. Of course we are never happy when we don’t win.
You’ve seen it over the past couple of years, Arsenal have had a good go at trying to win the league and they are top of the league for a reason.
On his goal, he says he’s done “a bit of research of his [Raya’s] games against Porto. It was nice to see him go early and make it easier for me.”
Trossard speaks to TNT
22:21 , Chris Wilson
Arsenal goalscorer Leandro Trossard is the first to come out in front of the cameras.
He says that the challenge at the end “looked like a penalty”.
“We started so well. We could have scored two or three goals after taking the lead. You can see what kind of quality Bayern Munich have to hurt us.
“Luckily I helped the team with a goal so I am pleased with that. I always try to do whatever I can on the pitch.
“Hopefully I can help in the next few weeks. We have such a great team and we know it will be hard over there.
“If we play at our best level we can beat anyone.”

A lot of entertainment in a game both sides will feel like they could have won, but they’ll have to put it behind them quickly at the business end of the season.
For Arsenal, attention turns back to the title race and a difficult game against Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday.
For Bayern, a very different scenario – they might lose their hold on the Bundesliga this weekend, with Bayer Leverkusen one win away from winning the league.

One view of that contact between Saka and Neuer at the end just below, but it really doesn’t tell a lot of the story!
FULL-TIME! Arsenal 2-2 Bayern Munich

A good day for those who disliked the away goals rule, as this game – and the other tie, which finished 3-3 between City and Real Madrid – hangs in the balance. No side has a real upper hand other than home advantage.
For Arsenal, it feels like a good result in the end. Coming into the game they were favourites, but you can’t complain with 2-2 if you’ve gone down 2-1 to Bayern Munich.
Both teams will feel like they can go through obviously, but do Bayern just about have the upper hand with home advantage?

How the teams are faring
19:47 , Chris Wilson
Despite the historic results in this tie, you’d have to think that Arsenal are convincing favourites ahead of tonight’s game.
Mikel Arteta’s men lead the Premier League on goal difference, having won eight of their last 10 games. They’ve scored 29 goals and conceded just three in that time.
Bayern have fared very differently of late. Thomas Tuchel has almost given up on winning the Bundesliga, with his side 16 points adrift of champions-elect Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern have won three of their last five games – including an 8-1 win against Mainz and a 3-0 win against Lazio – but were beaten 2-0 by Dortmund in Der Klassiker, and lost 3-2 to newly promoted Heidenheim last weekend.
Head-to-head
19:43 , Chris Wilson
These two teams have met on 12 occasions, with history very much on the side of the German team.
Bayern have won seven of the 12 meetings, with Arsenal winning three. Two have ended in a draw.
The last three meetings between the two sides finished 5-1 to Bayern, with Arsenal’s last win coming in the group stages of the 2015/16 season.
Bayern went through on away goals after the tie finished 3-3 in 2012/13, as the German side advanced on their way to winning a fifth European Cup.

A quick reminder of why the Emirates will seem particularly full of home fans this evening.
Bayern Munich will not be allowed away fans at the Emirates when they take on Arsenal tonight, after Bayern supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch during their 3-0 win over Lazio in the last-16. This triggered a one-match ban.

Arsenal ready to rewrite history and end Bayern Munich’s decade-long dynasty
19:20 , Chris Wilson
Mikel Arteta is so meticulous in preparations that when it comes to huge games like this, he knows he doesn’t have to say much. All of the work has been done on the training ground, the Arsenal players having been drilled to target Bayern Munich’s soft centre. Arteta certainly knows what not to say. He won’t be mentioning the 10-2 aggregate defeat from the last time the two teams met, rightly describing it as “history” when inevitably asked on the eve of the game.
It just isn’t relevant to his current Arsenal players, since none were involved. It’s barely relevant to the current Bayern squad, since only five were involved.
That quintet, led by Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich, now have far bigger concerns and there is an acute awareness that this iteration of Arsenal could do similar to them. Thomas Tuchel has been fixating on the gaps in his squad, which he feels are a consequence of longer-term squad-building issues.
That points to the one way the 10-2 is relevant in framing this game. It displays how empires rise and fall in football, and could neatly bookend what happened in 2017.

With the crowd behind them and their form in the league, it is hard to look beyond Arsenal, but Bayern only have the Champions League to play for after dropping out of the title race.

Bayern’s road to the quarter-final

Bayern had a similarly straightforward start to their Champions League campaign, easily progressing through their group before a small slip-up in their first round of 16 game and then a turnaround in the home tie to ensure qualification.
The Bavarian side came top of a group that included Manchester United, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, winning all but one of their games.
In the round of 16 the Germans faced a potentially difficult tie against a spirited Lazio side, with the first game in Rome ending 1-0 to the Italians. But Bayern turned it around in the home leg, winning 3-0 thanks to two goals from Harry Kane and another from Bayern veteran Thomas Muller.
Bayern’s Champions League results this season:
Bayern 4-3 Manchester United
Copenhagen 1-2 Bayern
Galatasaray 1-3 Bayern
Bayern 2-1 Galatasaray
Bayern 0-0 Copenhagen
Manchester United 0-1 Bayern
Lazio 1-0 Bayern
Bayern 3-0 Lazio
