Anthony Gordon has found himself the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool in recent days.

The former Everton star has enjoyed a standout season in his first full campaign with Newcastle United. Gordon has scored 10 goals and added 10 assists in 34 Premier League games, leading to him winning the club’s player of the year award.

His form has reportedly led to him catching the eye of Liverpool. According to the Daily Star, the Reds are interested in signing the 23-year-old this summer as an addition to their attacking options.

Should Liverpool want to sign Gordon, he certainly won’t come cheaply. He only made the move to St James’ Park last year in a $57m (£45m/€52m) deal from Everton, and it would reportedly take an offer close to $126m (£100m/€116m) for Newcastle to consider letting him go.

Amid the speculation, Gordon has posted on social media and expressed his delight at playing for his current club.

"What a place to play football," he wrote on Instagram after Newcastle’s final home game of the season against Brighton. "Thank you for all the support, some amazing memories at SJP this year."

Despite starting his professional journey at Everton, Gordon does have links to Liverpool. The forward was with the Reds’ academy before making the move across Stanley Park as an 11-year-old.

Not only that, but he has admitted to idolizing Steven Gerrard growing up, while also taking inspiration from Mohamed Salah.

Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon told The Overlap last month. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

Liverpool.com says: It would be a serious surprise to see Gordon making the move to Anfield, and not just because of his Everton links. Given the fee that it would take for Liverpool to sign him, it’s difficult to imagine him joining the Reds this summer.

There are simply other areas that will be a priority in Liverpool’s squad during the transfer window, and spending $126m or more on a forward could hamper efforts to bolster the defense, or perhaps sign a new number six.

There is clearly some admiration for Liverpool from Gordon though, and it feels like his Everton links wouldn’t necessarily put him off a move to Anfield. He might be one to keep a keen eye on in the future.
