An American bar was left stunned after a ‘free shots’ promotion for Women’s World Cup matches backfired in glorious fashion this week.

American Social Bar & Kitchen, in Miami, was offering free alcohol for every goal scored by the US Women’s National Team in France.

You are probably familiar with the rest; Carli Lloyd’s USA demolished Thailand 13-0 in their World Cup opener.

But the footballing minnows weren’t the only ones left humiliated by the large margin of victory.

Paul Greenberg, a managing partner at the bar, told Reuters the promotion ‘was not meant literally’.

"Our 'free shots' promotion is not meant to be taken literally, especially when records are shattered," Mr Greenberg said.

And ahead of the USA’s next match against Chile, the partner told potential customers a promotion would still take place - but not to the same extent.

He added: "No one expected this, so instead of passing around shots, we have welcomed our patrons back for a round on us during the match against Chile on Sunday."
