‘X-Men’ need a rest before joining the MCU, suggest 'Avengers: Endgame' writers

Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox already has comic-book fans dreaming about when the X-Men will finally crossover into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the franchise was conspicuous with its absence when Kevin Feige recently launched the fourth phase of the MCU at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month.

But delaying the debut of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the right course of action, according to Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Rather than just doing nothing with the Marvel properties that Marvel Studios have picked up from 20th Century Fox, McFeely believes that the Fantastic Four deserves to get the reboot treatment first, though.

"A good [Silver] Surfer movie would be great,” McFeely told Collider, in reference to the beloved Fantastic Four villains, with Markus adding, “Yeah, that would be if you could take it full-on cosmic.”

“That would be my first blush," continued McFeely, before he then explained why Marvel should wait a few years before diving into the wealth of X-Men material.

“Because I think X-Men should rest a second. I could be wrong, but I think they should rest. But Surfer could use a really good standalone."

Audiences couldn’t really complain if Marvel decided to give the X-Men a break, too. 12 X-Men movies were released between 2000 and June of this year, when Dark Phoenix brought the franchise to end in disastrous fashion. There is actually one more X-Men film still to come, as The New Mutants will finally be released on April 3, 2020.

But those of you waiting for Marvel to work their magic with the mutants won’t have to wait too long, as Kevin Feige finished his Marvel presentation at SDCC by teasing their involvement in Phase 5, which will begin in 2022.
