'Wonder Woman 1984' set to arrive on UK VOD streaming on 13 January

Wonder Woman 1984 will land on UK video on demand streaming platforms on 13 January, Warner Bros has confirmed.

The move comes after parts of the UK, including London and much of the south east, went into tier four restrictions, following the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus.

It also comes after the VOD window agreed between studios and cinemas has been significantly shortened, as screens remain closed around the country.

The movie, the sequel to Patty Jenkins' 2017 hit, will be available for 48-hour rental.

In a statement, the studio said: “In recognition of varying current market restrictions and to service the massive fan interest in Wonder Woman 1984, this film can be enjoyed by fans and families on the big screen where available in cinemas now, and in the comfort of their own home through Premium Video on Demand in the UK and Ireland starting on January 13.

“The film will continue to be available in cinemas where they are open, whilst also being available to watch at home for a 48-hour rental from participating digital retailers.”

A plotted deal with Sky's streaming services appears not to have been fruitful, so it's likely that other VOD options like Apple and Amazon will be the platforms that the movie will be available on.

COVID-19 restrictions worldwide have already hammered the sequel's box office prospects.

The movie has made just $38.5 million worldwide, with just $1.2 million (£906,000) coming from the UK, following its release on 16 December.

Helmed by Jenkins once more, the movie shifts the action from World War One to the 80s, with Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince facing off against Pedro Pascal's media mogul Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig's Cheetah.

Reviews have been largely decent.
