'Hobbs & Shaw' producer updates on sequel for 'Fast and Furious' spin-off
Hobbs & Shaw was a great success for the Fast & Furious franchise.
Not only did it receive mostly positive reviews, but it proved that the camaraderie between Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, which had been teased in Furious 7 and really came to the fore in The Fate Of The Furious, could be extended to a full feature film.
After banking $758.9 million worldwide, it always seemed likely that a follow-up to Hobbs & Shaw would eventually be put into production, too. Producer Hiram Garcia has now opened up about the potential sequel to Hobbs & Shaw, admitting that discussions with Universal Pictures are already underway.
“We are having conversations, we were so happy with how it did,” he told ComicBook.com. “The studio was extremely happy and there’s been a lot of great conversations just about seeing where things lay out.”
But while the studio and the creative talent behind Hobbs & Shaw are already in talks about the sequel, Garcia admits that they also have to consider the fact that the ninth installment to the Fast & Furious franchise is due out on May 22, 2020, which could impact the follow-up’s story.

“Obviously [Fast & Furious 9] is on its way. That’s going to do great things,” Garcia continued. “Taking some bits from that, cause it’s all a shared universe and it’s all in the works.”
Fast & Furious 9 sees Justin Lin, who oversaw Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6, return as director, while it has already been confirmed that he’ll also helm Fast & Furious 10, which is due out on April 2, 2021.
Meanwhile, those of you that are just interested in Johnson and Statham, will be relieved to learn that Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is coming to Blu-ray & DVD 2 December.
