Yahoo Movies Will Smith Explains Why He Chose Suicide Squad’s Deadshot
Ahead of DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’, actor Will Smith has spoken about what attracted him to the role of Deadshot.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Smith was quick to explain why he wanted to be a part of the David Ayer movie, as well as the badass character he plays. Smith’s got a reputation for being one of the good guys of Hollywood, especially with the countless heroic roles he’s had, in films such as ‘Independence Day’, ‘Men In Black’, ‘I, Robot’, as well as late boxing icon Muhammad Ali in ‘Ali’.
“I had never played a character that legitimately didn’t give a f***. It’s very freeing not having to carry the moral spine of the movie. I couldn’t find a model to understand what would make someone comfortable killing another person for money. David walked me through that. He found a book for me (The Anatomy of Motive by John Douglas), and I worked through getting into the mind of serial killers. Once I accepted the [notion the author puts forth] that it feels good, that really exploded the idea in my mind of Deadshot.”
But the character of Deadshot, Smith claims, isn’t simply a bad egg with no redeeming features.
“His Achilles heel is his daughter. He loves this little girl and that creates this bizarre conflicting mindset where he enjoys killing people but that’s something this little girl doesn’t want from him. She wants a daddy.”
In truth, a majority of bad or villainous characters we see on the big screen have an Achilles heel, allowing audiences to see some sort of humanity or redemptive act take place along the way.
It’s certainly a different kind of role for Smith, who’s so often linked not only to the protagonist role, but as a movie’s focal star. Here, there’s a dozen or more names forming the roster, with ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ star Margot Robbie set to steal the show with her portrayal of the iconic Harley Quinn. Jared Leto’s take on the Joker is also one of the biggest buzzes around the film, s for now at least Smith as to be content in being a team player rather than centr eof attention.
‘Suicide Squad’ is in UK cinemas from 5 August.
