Will Deadpool be in the MCU? Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick provide an update

Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox earlier this year means that the likes of X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool are all set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point in the future.

But while the addition of X-Men and Fantastic Four shouldn’t be a problem, Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed Merc With A Mouth might need to slightly adjust to fit in with Disney’s more family friendly vibe.

That could prove to be an issue, as 2016’s Deadpool and its 2018 sequel managed to connect with a huge audience mainly because of the profane, violent and explicit manner that it skewered and subverted the superhero genre.

Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who wrote both Deadpool films, have now provided an update on the development of a third, admitting that they are hopeful that Marvel will allow them “to continue Deadpool in his R-rated universe that he lives in.” Not only are they planning for that eventuality, Wernick recently teased to io9 that they are looking into how Deadpool can “play a little bit in the MCU sandbox as well.”

But don’t get too excited, as Reese was quick to add, “It’s all undetermined, though.” Clearly the pair have been thinking long and hard about how Deadpool could make his debut in the MCU, as Reese added, “Marvel’s a rich universe of both heroes and also, wonderfully, villains. So we would love to see Deadpool enter that universe in a fun way. It’s just about figuring out how and when.”

We might be waiting quite a while for Deadpool’s debut in the MCU, though.

Reese and Wernick admit that the “transition” of Fox to Disney “has delayed everything,” while Marvel are still “figuring out the next version of the MCU,” plus it also doesn’t help that Reynolds has now turned into one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, too.
