Whoopi Goldberg addresses film critic who wrongly said she wore fat suit in new movie

Whoopi Goldberg has told a film critic to "leave people's looks out" after they wrongly accused her of wearing a fat suit in her new movie Till.

The 66-year-old actor and TV presenter stated she was not wearing a fat suit in the biopic of activist Mamie Till Mobley as she reminded the movie reviewer from the Daily Beast to "just comment on the acting".

Goldberg said on her panel show The View: "I have to say something because there was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines and she was 'distracted by my fat suit' in her review.

"I’m just going to say this, I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit — that was me."

She added: "That was steroids. Last year I was [sick]. I assume you don't watch the show, or you would know that was not a fat suit.

"I just want to let you know it's okay not be a fan of a movie but you want to leave people's looks out.

"Just comment on the acting, and if you have a question, ask somebody. I'm sure you didn't mean to be demeaning."

Goldberg continues: "We will hope that she just didn't know, and now she'll know the next time you go to talk about somebody, you talk about them as an actor.

'If you're not sure if that's them in there, don't make blanket statements, because it makes you not sound like you know what you're doing."

In her review, Cunningham wrote: “Mamie’s journey leading up to the trial is structured by conversations between her and her family members - including Whoopi Goldberg as her mother, Alma Carthan, in a distracting fat suit."

The Daily Beast has now added an editor's not to the review stating: "This story has been updated to reflect that Whoopi Goldberg says she was not wearing a fat suit."

Goldberg suffered from sciatica in 2021, a type of nerve pain that required hospital treatment and saw her using a walking frame. She was prescribed steroids to treat the pain, a side effect of which can be swelling and weight-gain.

The Sister Act star is a producer on Till, as well as acting in the movie.

The biopic tells the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s fight for justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was lynched in 1955 after being accused of whistling at a white woman in Mississipi.

The film was directed by Chinonye Chukwu and also stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie.

Till is due to be released in UK cinemas in January 2023.
