When are all Star Wars films returning to cinemas?

You don’t need Force powers to predict this timeline…

Feel that? It’s a disturbance in the force… but a good one that signals all 10 Star Wars movies returning to big screens in cinemas across the UK.

First off, we know what you’re thinking. Three trilogies equals nine movies, right? Well, with Gareth Edwards’ stellar prequel spin-off Rogue One thrown into the mix, viewers can enjoy even more hand-slicing action from a galaxy far, far away in the way the full Skywalker saga was intended to be seen.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that George Lucas’s money-spinning space franchise has returned to cinemas. However, with British summer weather being more unpredictable than an angry Wookie, there’s never been a better time to head into a dark room and lose yourself in the most popular space opera going.

British cinemas will feel extra strong with the force starting from late August, with the midi-chlorian-fuelled buzz taking them right up to late October.

So far, there are two UK cinema chains set to take part in this screen-based Star Wars celebration, including Odeon and Cineworld. However, both have slightly different screening dates. We’ll highlight all the key information we have below but be sure to check with your local cinema before showing up at the box office in full Jedi garb.

Cineworld will be hosting Star Wars Sundays, featuring a new Star Wars movie each week. The fun starts with an airing of Episode I: The Phantom Menace on Friday 23 August at Odeon cinemas in what might be the first time the words ‘fun’ and ‘Phantom Menace’ have been used in the same sentence.

If your local is a Cineworld, you’ll find Lucas’s 1997 prequel — which turns 25 this year — screening a few days later on Sunday 25 August.

Next up is Episode II: Attack of the Clones, a movie that introduced us to Boba Fett’s dad Jango and finally let Yoda loose with a lightsabre. You’ll find this sequel screening on Friday 30 August at participating Odeons and Sunday 1 September at Cineworld.

Lucas’s CGI-heavy prequel trilogy came to a climactic close with Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, showing us how Anakin Skywalker was finally seduced by the dark side of the force.

Drama aside, the threequel has since gone down in film history for its brilliant dialogue (“From my point of view, the Jedi are evil” Good one, Anakin.) and a newly-crowned Darth’s delivery of the word ‘No’.

If you missed this the first time around in 2005, you’ll find it on Odeon screens from Friday 6 September and at Cineworld on Sunday 8 September.

From there, we’re back in time chronologically but forward in time in Star Wars lore - although before that happens, we pick up the story years later with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, screening from Friday 13 September at Odeon and Sunday 15 September at Cineworld.

This prequel follows the daring group of rebels who risk everything to steal the all-important Death Star plans that form the focus of the next movie.

Speaking of which, Anakin’s son Luke Skywalker takes the lead in Episode IV: A New Hope. Released in 1977, Lucas’s franchise-starter changed the game for movies and pop-culture, heralding in a new world of cinema, countless wannabe imitators and a hilariously infamous Holiday Special.

Catch the original classic on the big screen from Friday 20 September at Odeon and Sunday 22 September at Cineworld.

Now we’re getting somewhere. As the undisputed best of the bunch, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is dark, daring and highly quotable.

After the success of A New Hope, no one expected Lucas to be able to bottle lightning twice — so he didn’t. Instead, he hired director Irvin Kershner to create a movie that takes the first film’s themes and somehow makes them even more profound.

Relive the adventure from Friday 27 September at Odeon and Sunday 29 September at Cineworld.

Original trilogy capper Episode VI: Return of the Jedi returns to screens the following week, giving Star Wars fans the chance to see Luke wrangle a Rancor, topple the Empire and finally redeem his bad dad.

As if that wasn’t enough to lure you to Cineworld venues on Friday 4 October or Sunday 6 October at Odeon, director Richard Marquand even throws in some dancing Ewoks to sweeten the deal.

From here, we edge towards the current Star Wars timeline, with JJ Abrams’s Episode VII: The Force Awakens reigniting the battle from Friday 11 October at Odeon and Sunday 13 October at Cineworld.

Rian Johnson’s divisive sandwich-middle Episode VIII: The Last Jedi follows at Odeon cinemas from Friday 18 October and Cineworld on Sunday 20 October before Abrams returns to finish things up with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker on Friday 25 at Odeon and Sunday 27 October at Cineworld.

As if all this wasn’t good enough, Odeon cinemas are also hosting a Star Wars weekender on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, with the first three films of the Skywalker Saga airing on day one and the final three (plus Rogue One) airing the very next day.

What more could you want? Other than regular bathroom breaks, obviously.
