What the 'Jurassic World' short film might tell us about 'Jurassic World 3'

Yesterday saw director Colin Trevorrow reveal that he's somehow managed to film a Jurassic World 'short' entirely in secret.

The eight-minute-long Battle At Big Rock will air this weekend on the FX channel in the US and then be released online shortly after, and it will likely tell us a bit about what Jurassic World 3 might involve.

Speaking to Collider, Trevorrow said: “Battle At Big Rock is a short film that takes place one year after the events of Fallen Kingdom.

“It’s about a family on a camping trip to Big Rock National Park, about 20 miles from where the last film ended. There have been a few sightings, but this is the first major confrontation between dinosaurs and humans.”

He then explained: “We shot it in Ireland last winter. They have a grove of redwood trees outside Dublin that look exactly like the national parks in Northern California.

“I honestly never thought we’d make it this far without getting found out. The Irish can keep a secret.”

As per the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the unthinkable has happened, with dinosaurs now loose on the US mainland.

“You have these animals loose in an unfamiliar environment, they’re disoriented, struggling to adapt. The first people they run into are bound to be camping. I wanted to see that,” he went on.

“There are two species we’ve never seen before. The Nasutoceratops, which is a beautiful herbivore that feels like a Texas Longhorn. And the Allosaurus, one of the most iconic dinosaurs of all time. This one was a juvenile in the last movie. She’s all grown up now.

“The world is bigger than just the characters we’ve been following in the films. We’ve finally taken the story off Isla Nublar, we wanted to show a glimpse of that new reality.

“If this really happened, you’d see a series of random disconnected incidents that would create a pattern of chaos. I wanted to see one of those incidents.”

Trevorrow made the first rebooted Jurassic World movie (making Universal over a billion dollars in the process), before handing the reigns to J.A. Bayona for Fallen Kingdom.

But now he’s back on board, he is remaining tight-lipped about where the plot for the third movie is headed.

“This is the movie I’ve been wanting to make since we started. It’s a celebration of everything we love about the franchise and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. You’ll hear more about it soon,” he said.

Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, Jurassic World 3 is slated for release in June, 2021.
