The Worst Oscars Moment Was A Painful Appearance By Clueless Star Stacey Dash

The biggest tumbleweed moment as this year’s Oscars was a bizarre appearance by ‘Clueless’ star Stacey Dash. Watch it above if you dare.

Some context: Dash is a pundit for right wing US TV channel Fox News, where she has been outspoken against the likes of Black History Month, award shows like the BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards and the NAACP Image Awards, and the #OscarsSoWhite protest.

The Oscars has been subject to fierce criticism after no non-white actors were nominated in any of the 4 main acting categories, hence the hash tag.

So imagine Hollywood’s surprise when host Chris Rock announced that Dash was “the new director of our minority outreach programme”.

The giggling Dash emerged on stage and said: “I cannot wait to help my people out. Happy Black History Month!”

The studio audience was confused and responded to the joke with a painful silence.

After the event, Dash explained the appearance with a blog post aptly titled ‘Who is Stacey Dash and why did she just walk across the #Oscar stage?’.

She wrote: “When they added ME to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not “black enough,” they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks – and votes – just like all my friends.

Most people probably rolled their eyes because the gag landed with a thud and had to be explained with a blog post afterwards.

However, she did make an interesting point about the Oscars’ lack of political as well as ethnic diversity, writing: “[I was] Bringing diversity to Hollywood… not merely because of color, but politics as well. (After all, different colors of skin is an easy kind of diversity. Ideological diversity is much harder, because it forces everyone to come face to face with actual beliefs. Hollywood needs BOTH.)

It was a weird moment in a ceremony that otherwise handled the diversity row well, with host Chris Rock addressing the subject head-on in his opening monologue, saying: “We want opportunities. We want the black actors to get the same opportunities, that’s it.”
