Disney has finally confirmed that The Simpsons will be available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.

There had been lingering doubt about whether Fox’s iconic animated sitcom would be on the Hollywood giant’s streaming service when it launches in the UK on 24 March.

But a single post from the official Disney+ UK Twitter account has finally put fans’ minds at rest: “Grab yourself a D’oh-nut and stay tuned”, the post read, accompanied by an animated picture of the sugary treat favoured by Homer Simpson.

When Disney+ launched in North America in November 2019 thirty seasons of The Simpsons, the 11-time Emmy Award-winning animated sitcom, were available to watch on day one. Bar one episode.

Disney completed its acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its IP (intellectual property) in 2019, paving the way for The Simpsons to become part of the Disney family. The Simpsons recently poked fun at the Disney merger in a recent episode that parodied Marvel’s Avengers film franchise.

In the UK, Channel 4 is currently the home of classic episodes of the show while Sky One has the “first run” rights to the most recent series. It’s currently airing the 31st season showing new episodes weekly.

It seems unlikely that UK Disney+ subscribers will get the entire The Simpsons back catalogue on day one, but we expect to find out more details about the full UK slate of content coming to Disney+ in the coming weeks. Question marks still remain over what extent of the Marvel Studios and Star Wars back catalogue will be available on the service.

Disney and Sky have just struck a multi-year deal to bring Disney+ to Sky Q and Now TV in the UK and Ireland.

The streaming service which will be available for purchase as an app, will first launch on set-top box service Sky Q, followed by streaming service Now TV in the coming months.

Disney+ launches in the UK on 24 March. It will be £5.99 a month, £59.99 for a year, or if you pre-order ahead of launch you can get 12 months for just £49.99.
