Sylvester Stallone would love to make a 'Tango & Cash' sequel, if Kurt Russell wants to do it

With Rambo: Last Blood now splattering its way through cinemas, Sylvester Stallone has turned his crosshairs to another film from his 1980s heyday in the shape of Tango & Cash.

Stallone told Fandango that he’d be keen to make a follow-up to the 1989 buddy cop movie, as long as he can get co-star Kurt Russell on board.

The 73-year-old played Lieutenant Ray Tango in the film — the Westside of Los Angeles equivalent to Russell’s Eastside top cop Lieutenant Gabe Cash.

Their rivalry becomes a collaboration when both cops are framed by a drug lord for the murder of an FBI agent and must work together to clear their names.

“I would do Tango & Cash in a second,” Stallone said.

He added that he had approached Russell about the possibility of returning to the characters, but that he was not convinced and said: “there we were in our prime and now we’re in our un-prime”.

Stallone said the pair agreed to revisit the conversation at a later date, so fans might yet get to see the two stars — combined age 141 — fighting side by side again.

Tango & Cash is not the only project from Stallone’s past that could be due for a re-run, with a TV series spin-off from 1986 actioner Cobra reportedly in the works over at Alita: Battle Angel director Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network.

He said: “I’m talking with Robert Rodriguez right now about Cobra, which looks like that could happen.

“It’s basically his baby now.”

Stallone has been prolific in returning to his most successful roles, revitalising Rocky Balboa as a supporting character in the Creed films, as well as revamping John Rambo for several blood-soaked sequels.

He is currently working on another Rocky movie, which would focus on a young immigrant character whom Rocky takes under his wing.

Rambo: Last Blood has received mixed reviews from critics since its cinema debut, with one critic referring to the film as “deranged”.
