New 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' trailer introduces 'the multiverse' but it's probably misdirection

The new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer gives us more context regarding Peter Parker’s next adventure and fans have gotten excited over one word: “multiverse”.

The multiverse theory posits that there are infinite variations of our own universe that exist side-by-side. The concept is a common narrative tool in science fiction, and comics, and in the case of this movie it’s used to explain the arrival of Spider-Man nemesis Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) explains to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) that “The Snap tore a hole in our dimension,” and allowed for the arrival of Quentin Beck/Mysterio who is allegedly from another world.

Beck tells Peter, “we could use someone like you on our world,” but if we’re to go by the comic book history of the character this whole multiverse business might be a misdirect.

Mysterio has always been a villain, and a special effects whizz in the Marvel Comics and has used his deception skills and trickery to pull the wool over Spidey on several occasions so it’s best to be sceptical about his ally role in Far From Home.

He could be lying about the multiverse and managed to trick Nick Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) into believing that The Snap had caused a dimensional tear – it wouldn’t be the first time it the pair had let bad guys succeed under their watch *coughs* Hail Hydra *coughs* – or he might just be lying about him being from another Earth.

Beck may well be an Earthling from this Earth and using the rip as an excuse to carry out some nefarious dealings.

We’ve already seen the multiverse put into practice with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and with Captain America’s Endgame ending hinting he was in a parallel universe this could be the direction both Sony and Marvel Studios are keen to go in.

It would certainly open up opportunities to bring in new characters like Miles Morales or explain the absence of the X-Men and Fantastic Four from the MCU so far.

Endgame opened up the possibilities for a much, much larger universe,” director Jon Watts told EW.

“All that stuff sort of converged in the perfect way for us.”

“What I wanted to do was bring this iconic character into the world in a way that people weren’t expecting,” he added. “And Mysterio as the hero is definitely something that we haven’t seen before.

“The idea of Spider-Man, Mysterio, and Nick Fury teaming up to take on this global threat of the Elementals was really exciting.”

Hmm, all we can say is that when it comes to Mysterio maybe it’s best to keep your guard up, Spidey.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is in cinemas from 2 July.
