Sky Cinema and NOW: Everything new in September 2021

One of the year's most highly anticipated action movies is heading to Sky Cinema in September as Karen Gillan's assassin joins forces with her estranged mother — another assassin, played by Lena Headey — to protect an eight-year-old girl. Gunpowder Milkshake, though, is just one of many things coming to Sky Cinema and NOW this month.

On the TV front, Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays are returning for another series of cop comedy Code 404 and Russell Howard is back fronting his current affairs show The Russell Howard Hour. Perhaps the main event, though, is the return of beloved panel game Never Mind the Buzzcocks — six years after it was axed by the BBC.

Long Story Short (3 September)

Time-bending comedies are having a bit of a moment right now, with Bill & Ted Face the Music providing nostalgic chuckles last year and Palm Springs emerging as one of the best movies of 2021 so far. The latest entry in the genre is Long Story Short, in which Rafe Spall wakes up the morning after his wedding to find that his life is jumping forward by a year every few minutes.

Zahra Newman plays Spall's wife and the movie follows his attempts to keep his rapidly unfolding life in check as it falls apart amid the carnage of the time jumps.

Gunpowder Milkshake (17 September)

Released in the USA earlier this year, Israeli director Navot Papushado's delightfully named actioner Gunpowder Milkshake has finally arrived on these shores. Lena Headey and Karen Gillan are the mother and daughter assassins who patch up their differences in order to save the life of an eight-year-old girl who has become a target for a whole host of other trained killers.

The current critical consensus for Gunpowder Milkshake on Rotten Tomatoes declares the film to be "a brutal blast that will absorb audiences into its neon infused universe". That has to be worth a watch.

New TV on Sky Cinema and NOW in September

Code 404 S2 (1 September)

Code 404 was one of the comedic gems of 2020, pairing two of Britain's best actors together in a terrific, high-concept sitcom. Daniel Mays portrays DI John Carver who, after dying in the line of duty, is infused with an artificial intelligence which brings him back to life, albeit in slightly malfunctioning form. Stephen Graham is his straight-laced colleague, who also began sleeping with Carver's wife — played by yet another Line of Duty alumnus in Anna Maxwell Martin — while he was dead.

Given how the previous series ended, the table has been set for there to be a very different dynamic this time around. With Graham and Mays in the lead roles, it's difficult not to think this will be another excellent series.

Landmark S1 (6 September)

This documentary series aims to explore the notion of public art in the UK, with the hope of creating the country's next major landmark, which will subsequently be erected in Coventry — the current UK City of Culture. Gemma Cairney will host the series, which includes contributions from the likes of Benjamin Zephaniah, Charlotte Church and Russell Tovey.

The Russell Howard Hour S5 (9 September)

Russell Howard has been fronting a regular show discussing the news ever since Russell Howard's Good News debuted on BBC Three way back in 2009. His latest project — now in its fifth series on Sky — is The Russell Howard Hour, in which his current affairs monologues are coupled with skits and segments involving other stand-up comedians.

Wolfe (10 September)

This darkly funny crime drama series stars Babou Ceesay as a forensics expert deployed to examine some of Northern England's most grotesque crime scenes. The six-part series, following a different case each week, is the brainchild of Shameless creator Paul Abbott.

Isle of Wight Festival 2021 (16 September)

Music festivals are back after last year's festival season was scuppered by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emanating from Newport, this year's Isle of Wight Festival will feature sets from the likes of Liam Gallagher, Duran Duran, Snow Patrol and Tom Jones.

Young Rock (17 September)

In a neat twist on his own worldwide popularity, Dwayne Johnson's real life growing up in the world of professional wrestling takes centre stage in this comedy series. It begins with Johnson running for president in 2032 and then follows various eras of his life, with different actors playing him at different ages. Unsurprisingly given Johnson's status as Hollywood's hottest commodity, a second season has already been greenlit.

Missile from the East (18 September)

In this documentary special, motorcycle racing fans will be able to explore the life and impact of Ernst Degner, who revolutionised the sport in the 1960s. Living in East Germany, he defected to the West during the Cold War after witnessing the better lives of riders he competed against. It should be a fascinating take on a remarkable sporting story.

Hawking — Can You Hear Me? (date TBC)

Three years after Stephen Hawking passed away at the age of 76, this documentary delves into the life and impact of one of Britain's most recognisable and influential scientific figures. With input from his family and friends, this doc provides an intimate look at one of the most important British people to ever live.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks (date TBC)

Six years after it was cancelled by the BBC in 2015, Never Mind the Buzzcocks is back to provide a sideways look at the world of music. Greg Davies is the new host and Noel Fielding has returned to captain one of the teams, with This Country breakout star Daisy May Cooper as his opposite number. The rebooted series will run for eight episodes, with a Christmas special also on the way.
