New movies on Sky Cinema and NOW in January 2022
Naked Singularity (2 January)
In director Chase Palmer's debut feature, John Boyega portrays a public defender in New York City who has become increasingly disillusioned at the injustices inherent within the system around him. This brings him into the orbit of a former client — played by Olivia Cooke — and the high-stakes drug deal she is currently in the process of carrying out. Ed Skrein, Tim Blake Nelson and Bill Skarsgård are also in the cast.
Save the Cinema (14 January)
An inspiring true story comes to the big screen in this British drama, set in the Welsh town of Carmarthen and filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Samantha Morton plays hairdresser Liz Evans who, in 1993, started a campaign to prevent the closure of the town's local theatre and cinema. She joins forces with Tom Felton's local councillor to hatch an ambitious plan, which involves Hollywood icon Steven Spielberg and the small matter of his blockbuster dinosaur film.
Mass (20 January)
Actor and frequent Joss Whedon collaborator Fran Kranz makes his debut behind the camera with this smart, intense drama set almost entirely within the confines of a single room. Reed Birney and Ann Dowd play a couple who have arranged a meeting with another set of parents — played by Jason Isaacs and Martha Plimpton — to discuss something very sensitive. Several years prior, Birney and Dowd's son was the perpetrator of a school shooting, with Isaacs and Plimpton's son among the victims.
The Alpinist (22 January)
In the wake of the Oscar-winning climbing doc Free Solo, this is another intense journey into the risky world of extreme climbing. At the centre of it all is young climber Marc-André Leclerc, who is shown attempting some of the most difficult ascents in the history of the sport.
One Shot (29 January)
Scott Adkins leads a group of Navy SEALs tasked with transporting a suspected terrorist from a CIA black site in this thriller from Tower Block director James Nunn. Ashley Greene appears as a junior CIA analyst who has to team with the SEALs when the base is attacked by insurgents.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (1 January)
Somehow, it has been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first catapulted Hogwarts from the pages of JK Rowling's novels to the big screen. In order to commemorate that anniversary, the cast of the entire Potter series has come together — led by lead trio Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson — to reminisce about the first film and the decade-long franchise it spawned. There won't be a dry eye in the Gryffindor common room by the end.
Shark: British Isles Special with Steve Backshall (1 January)
After his globe-trotting — and occasionally death-defying — shark series earlier this year, adventurer and presenter Steve Backshall returns to the water for this special episode focusing on the 20 native shark species of the United Kingdom.
Secret Life of the Koala (2 January)
We tend to assume that the existence of a koala is pretty simple, mostly involving just hanging about in trees and munching on eucalyptus leaves. This documentary, however, shows that the languid critters are actually capable of much more than we expect.
A Discovery of Witches S3 (7 January)
The writing of Deborah Harkness is again the inspiration for the third and final series of this supernatural adventure tale. Matthew Goode returns as vampire Matthew, while Teresa Palmer is also back in the role of witch Diana. The characters return to the present day from the 16th century in search of the missing pages of the crucial Book of Life.
Murders at Starved Rock (9 January)
It has been more than 60 years since the bodies of three murdered women were discovered in one of the famous canyons of Starved Rock State Park, Illinois. After serving several decades in prison and with doubts swirling about his confession, the man convicted of one of the murders is now seeking to clear his name.
Euphoria S2 (10 January)
Sam Levinson's drama following the romantic lives of a group of high school students — with Zendaya in the lead role — returns for an eight-part second season. The show has received praise for its approach to tackling mature and sensitive themes, with Zendaya teasing that the second season will be "challenging" for many viewers.
Kalahari: Land of Secret Alliances (16 January)
The difficult ecosystem of Africa's Kalahari Desert is the focus of this documentary, which uses innovative camera techniques to shine a light on the way the region's various species work together in order to ensure that they can all survive and thrive in the inhospitable wilderness.
Red Elvis (24 January)
Dean Reed defected from America to the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War and made the transition from US teen idol to darling of Communism. In 1986, though, he was found dead in a Berlin lake at the age of just 47. This documentary explores his life and career with the help of previously unseen footage.
The Gilded Age (25 January)
Julian Fellowes is always at home telling glossy stories about rich people in beautiful frocks, and The Gilded Age provides another opportunity for the Downton Abbey creator to showcase those skills. Set in 1882, it follows the orphaned daughter of a Southern general who finds herself thrust into the world of New York City high society.
Billions S6 (26 January)
This Showtime series set in the often criminal world of finance is back for another season, with something of a new look. Leading man Damian Lewis has departed the show, leaving attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) to forge a new rivalry with Corey Stoll's character — a billionaire who, on the face of it, is driven by a desire to help society.
Frayed S2 (27 January)
Sarah Kendall is back as Sammy in the second season of her comedy-drama series, which again splits its setting between London and Australia. Sammy has made it back to the UK and is struggling to make ends meet in a tiny flat, while trying to conceal what happened to her neighbour in Australia.
The Sleepwalker (30 January)
This innovative take on the true crime genre investigates the case of Randy Herman Jr, who was convicted of the murder of his childhood best friend, despite his claims he committed the crime while sleepwalking and had no intention of killing his victim.
