It finds LaBeouf playing an enforcer for a crime lord, who collects the cut of profits from smaller local gangs.
LaBeouf also starred in Ayer's movie Fury in 2014, during which he had a tooth pulled out for the role, and also cut his face, leaving him with a permanent scar.
“He’s one of the best actors I’ve worked with, and he’s the most committed to body and soul,” Ayer said in an interview with Slashfilm.
“He had a tooth pulled on Fury, and then on Tax Collector, he got his whole chest tattooed.
“So, he kind of goes all in, and I’ve never known anyone that committed.”
As well as pulling a tooth out, it was said that while making Fury, LaBeouf also stopped showering in order to better understand his character, a member of a tank crew in World War II, leading to him being placed in a different accommodation, away from the rest of the cast.
However, he's since turned his back on method acting.
He told Variety in 2016: “The word is getting embarrassing. You don't hear about female method actors. The whole thing has turned into weird, false masculinity s**t.”
The Tax Collector also stars Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona and George Lopez.
