Robin Hood has PTSD in upcoming John Wick inspired reboot
After countless incarnations of ‘Robin Hood’, that range from the good to the bad to the Crowe, the upcoming reboot of the character was always going to need a different hook to make it stand-out.
Like seemingly every other reboot or blockbuster the team in charge of ‘Robin Hood: Origins’ have decided that their incarnation will be very serious and gritty, and they’re even going as far as to give Taron Edgerton’s Robin Hood post-traumatic stress disorder.
Producer Basil Iwaynk made this revelation to Collider, while he also teased that the “fractured society” that Robin Hood comes back to is very relevant to today’s climate.
“It’s a kid going off to war thinking he’s going on a great Crusade, and realising it’s all bullshit and coming back with some PTSD and realising he’s been lied to, and coming back to kind of a fractured society that doesn’t really accept him, and realising, ‘Okay the super rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer.’ You could describe that now.”
Iwaynk revealed that screenwriter Joby Harold (‘King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword’) has created an “allegorical” and “contemporary” story that feels “youthful” in a very angry and energetic fashion.
When asked to think up comparisons, Iwaynk noted that ‘Robin Hood: Origins’s’ stunt work has been “inspired” by ‘John Wick’, as he added, “The stuff we’re doing with the bow and arrow, it’s the same thing that Keanu [Reeves] does with the gun.” Iwanynk finished by insisting, “The costumes, it just feels different than any other Robin Hood we had.”
No word yet on whether Robin Hood has a dog given to him by Maid Marian, though. But we can only hope. We’ll find out when ‘Robin Hood: Origins,’ which is directed by Otto Bathurst, and is set to star Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, Eve Hewson, and Jamie Foxx, is released on March 23, 2018.
