80s icon Rick Moranis coming out of retirement for 'Honey, I Shrunk The Kids' sequel

It's official – Rick Moranis will be coming out of retirement for Disney's forthcoming Honey, I Shrunk The Kids sequel. The Ghostbusters star’s last movie role came in 1997.

The movie will be called Shrunk, and will find original director Joe Johnston back in the saddle too, according to Deadline. It’s a going to get a full-blown theatrical release, and will not go straight to Disney+ as originally reported.

It will star Frozen’s Josh Gad as the son of Moranis's character from the original movies, inventor Wayne Szalinski.

Gad's character is also an aspiring inventor and, true to form, accidentally shrinks his own kids too.

After the first movie, released in 1989, sequels Honey, I Blew Up The Kid, and the straight-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves were spawned.

The latter was Moranis's last studio movie, released in 1997.

He all but retired from acting the same year to look after his children following the death of their mother in 1991.

Other than voicing the moose character Rutt in the Brother Bear movies, Moranis has resisted the urge to return to acting, until now.

However, he will also soon feature in a forthcoming Martin Scorsese documentary movie, being made for Netflix, on Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV.

An Afternoon With SCTV will explore the history of the storied show, which helped launch the careers of comedy legends like John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short and Moranis himself.

After SCTV, Moranis went on to appear in hit movies like Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs and Parenthood.
