Peaky Blinders movie will be set during World War 2

Steven Knight has confirmed that the Peaky Blinders movie will be set during World War 2.

The Peaky Blinders creator was discussing the long rumoured project with the Radio Times though there has been no official announcement as yet.

Asked about the upcoming film, Knight stopped short of formally announcing the movie as "I get shot if I announce anything" but he did confirm that "it's coming and it's soon".

Knight also confirmed that the backdrop for the film will be the Second World War. The series takes place between 1919 and 1933 so the film will represent a jump in time from the show's ambiguous ending that saw Tommy Shelby on horseback, seemingly moving away from a life of crime.

The prolific TV writer also said that the film will feature new characters and that fans of the show should "expect the unexpected" and that it will be "the same but different".

Over its nine year run on the BBC, Peaky Blinders became one of the broadcaster's most popular shows and also proved to be a hit in the US through Netflix.

Ever since the show ended with its sixth season last year, there has been near constant talk of a film continuation of the series.

While the film has not been formally confirmed by the BBC, Knight has previously suggested that a movie is closer to hitting the cinemas than you may think.

Last year, he said: "It should be in cinemas by the Spring 2024."

Cillian Murphy is expected to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby but there have been no other inklings about the rest of the large cast including Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Anya Taylor-Joy, Tom Hardy and Sam Claflin who played the final season's villain Oswald Mosley.
