Patrick Stewart's 'Star Trek' spin off gets first teaser

A teaser for Picard, the upcoming Star Trek TV spin-off, has been released today.

With acting legend Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role of the eponymous Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: Picard will pick up nearly twenty years after where Star Trek: The Next Generation left off.

The 69 second teaser seems to infer Jean-Luc has retired from Starfleet and is now living on his family’s French vineyard.

The clip shows Steward walking through said vineyard, while a voice over says: “Fifteen years ago today, you led us out of the darkness. You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history, then the unimaginable.

“What did that cost you? Your faith. Your faith in us. Your faith in yourself. Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet Admiral?”

Talking about his character after he announced his involvement in the series, Stewart said: “He may not be a captain anymore. He may not be the Jean-Luc you recognise and know so well. It may be a very different individual, someone who has been changed by his experiences.”

When asked recently about a potential movie, Stewart replied: "We are set up for possibly three years of this show, so if there is a film, it's a long way off.”

CBS has also released a poster for the new show with the tagline "the end is only the beginning".

Star Trek: Picard has recently been described as a "10-episode movie" by Next Generation star Jonathan Frakes, who is directing episodes 3 and 4.

He said: "It is a very ambitious approach to television. I think the fans are going to be thrilled and excited and surprised."

Star Trek: Picard is expected to premiere towards the end of the year. Stewart will be joined in the cast by Santiago Cabera (Salvation), Michelle Hurd (Blindspot), Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Mr. Mercedes), Isa Briones (Takers) and Evan Evagora (Fantasy Island).

Star Trek: Picard will air on CBS All Access in the US and Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
