Oscars 2022: How to watch the nominated films in the UK

The Oscars 2022 will take place on 28 March, with films such as The Power of the Dog, Don't Look Up, West Side Story, and Belfast all nominated for Academy Awards.

The best thing about this year's nominations is that most of the films are available to stream or rent from home, so you can start placing your bets on who's going to win what from the comfort of your own home.

From Netflix to Prime Video, Disney+ and Sky, there’s plenty of options to choose from, with seven of the 10 movies nominated for Best Picture available to stream now.

From this list, Belfast, Licorice Pizza and Nightmare Alley are only available to watch in cinemas currently, but will be coming home later this year.

Here’s how to watch the biggest films of the year at home…

Don't Look Up

One of the most talked about comedies of 2021 was Adam McKay's Don't Look Up.

It tells the story of two astronomers, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, who have to go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet destined to hit Earth. The blockbuster cast also includes Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande.

Don't Look Up is streaming on Netflix.

The Power of the Dog

Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog leads the way this year, with an impressive 12 nominations in total.

Campion made history by becoming the first ever female director to land two Best Directing nominations, while Benedict Cumberbatch is up for Best Actor.

The Western drama tells the story of a domineering but charismatic rancher who torments his brother's new wife and her teenage son, until long-hidden secrets come to light.

The Power Of The Dog is streaming on Netflix.

West Side Story

In Steven Spielberg's first ever musical, he takes on the classic musical West Side Story.

The film tells the tale of forbidden love and and rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks - two teenage street gangs from different ethnic backgrounds. Starring Rachel Zelger, Ansel Elgort and Arian DeBose.

West Side Story is available to stream on Disney+.

CODA

As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her family. After the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby is faced with the choice of pursuing her passion for singing by going to Berklee College of Music or staying to support her parents.

The film is up for three Oscars including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and deaf actor Troy Kotsur is up for Best Supporting Actor.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

In The Tragedy of Macbeth, Denzel Washington plays a Scottish lord who becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland.

This drama thriller directed by Joel Coen, who puts a fresh spin on the Shakespeare classic. It's up for three awards, including Washington as Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

Belfast

While Belfast isn't able to stream at the moment, it is currently showing in cinemas and is available to pre-order on DVD from Amazon and HMV.

Written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, it tells the tale of a young boy from Belfast and his working-class family during The Troubles in the late 1960s. The seven-Oscars-nominated film stars Jude Hill, Jamie Dorman and Judi Dench among others great actors.

Belfast is in cinemas now, available to rent on digital, with a home release planned later in 2022.

Drive My Car

Japanese film Drive My Car is up for four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film is about a renowned stage actor and director called Yusuke Kafuku who's wife dies unexpectedly. Following his wife's death, he receives an offer to direct a production of the play 'Uncle Vanya' in Hiroshima. This is where he begins to face the haunting mysteries that his wife left behind.

You can rent Drive My Car now from BFI Player and Curzon. It will be available to stream on MUBI from 1 April.

Dune

Dune was one of the most talked about films of last year. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, this sci-fi film is an adaption of Frank Herbert's novel about the son of a noble family entrusted with the protection of the most vital element in the galaxy.

Denis Villeneuve's adaption has been nominated for an astounding 10 Oscars in total, due to its breathtaking picture, sound and cinematography.

Dune is available on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital now.

Licorice Pizza

Paul Thomas Anderson's film Licorice Pizza tell the story of two characters — Alana Kane and Gary Valentine — who are growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the seventies and going through the difficult navigation of experiencing first love. It stars Alana Haim, Sean Penn and Cooper Hoffman as leads and it's been nominated for Best Picture, while Anderson is up for two awards.

It's not available to stream in the UK yet, but will be available on digital from 1 April.

Being the Ricardos

Being the Ricardos follows the lives of I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz as they face a crisis which could end their careers and another that could end their marriage. Nicole Kidman is up for Best Actress for her performance. It's directed by Aaaron Sorkin, who directed Netflix's The Trial of the Chicago 7 last year.

King Richard

Will Smith could potentially win Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, a movie which looks at how tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams became who they are today after the coaching they receive from their father Richard Williams. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, it tells the tale of a father's unconditional belief in his daughters.

King Richard is available on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital now.

Spencer

Kristen Stewart's take on Princess Diana in the film Spencer had heads turning last year. The movie looks at Diana during her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate, where she was dealing with mental health issues and her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles. Stewart has been nominated for Best Actress.

Spencer will be available to stream on Prime Video from 25 March.

The Lost Daughter

Olivia Colman could potentially bag her second Oscar for her role in The Lost Daughter. An adaption of Elena Ferrante's book, it tells the story of a woman whose beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past, while dealing with the difficulties of motherhood.

The Lost Daughter is streaming on Netflix.

Nightmare Alley

Crime thriller Nightmare Alley is about ambitious carny (played by Bradley Cooper), with a talent for manipulating people who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is. Guillermo del Toro's film has four nominations, including Best Picture.

Nightmare Alley will be streaming on Disney+.

Parallel Mothers

Last but not least, Parallel Mothers is a unique story of two mothers who give birth the same day. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar, it stars Penelope Cruz and Milena Smit as leading roles. Cruz is up for Best Actress.

Parallel Mothers is in cinemas and available to rent on digital now.

Tick, Tick... Boom!

The directorial debut of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tick, Tick... Boom! tells the story of playwright Jonathan Larson, and has landed Andrew Garfield his second Best Actor Oscar nomination.

It follows the musician's journey to creating the hit musical Rent which premiered the day after he sadly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Tick, Tick... Boom! is streaming on Netflix.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Jessica Chastain gives a transformational performance as real-life televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye which has been Oscar-nominated for Best Actress and Best Hair and Makeup, and it's not hard to see why.

Tammy Faye was hailed as a vital LGBTQ+ ally in the 1980s when she interviewed a Christian Pastor with AIDS on her show.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye will be available to stream on Disney+ from 23 March.
