Oscars 2021 poll: Who should win Best Actress?

On Sunday 25 April, the biggest ceremony of the film awards season will take place - the 2021 Academy Awards.

Best Actress is another tight race this year, with Carey Mulligan the current favourite to win.

But we want to know who you think will take home the golden statuette…

Viola Davis, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

A favourite to win is Davis, playing blues singer Ma Rainey in the eponymous American drama covering a recording session in 1920s Chicago.

Davis was honoured with a SAG Award and nominations for the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globes Awards, and Hollywood race predictors Gold Derby put her odds up at 19/5 to win.

Her performance was hailed as “noteworthy” and “larger-than-life” by Amon Warmann, giving four stars out of five in Empire.

Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holliday

Day played Billie Holiday in this American biographical film which covers events from the singer's life where she was targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics over tensions surrounding race and drugs.

She won a Golden Globe, and was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Awards for her role, and Charlotte O’Sullivan has given it four out of five stars in the Evening Standard, writing that the “Grammy nominated singer...brings so much passion to her first film role that the hackneyed phrase ‘a star is born’ fits her like a long glove.”

Day is down at 4/1 in the Gold Derby to take home the Oscar on Sunday and the film can be streamed through NOW TV’s Entertainment Pass and Sky Cinema.

Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman

In this tragic film, Kirby plays Martha Weiss, a new mother who loses her baby shortly after her home birth, and is forced to navigate family tension and a legal battle with their midwife thereafter.

Kirby was nominated for a SAG Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, with Peter Debruge writing of her “remarkable commitment of that childbirth scene” in Variety.

The drama is available to watch on Netflix and the Best Actress hopeful is down at 9/2 to win in the Gold Derby.

Frances McDormand, Nomadland

Nomadland tells the story of a widow who loses her job and moves from Nevada to join real-life nomads in Arizona.

McDormand has won a BAFTA, was nominated for a SAG Award, a Golden Globe, and a Critics’ Choice Award for her role in the film, putting her at 4/1 to win in the Gold Derby.

Peter Bradshaw says McDormand has delivered “the performance of her career”, giving it five stars in The Guardian.

The film is available to watch on Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman

Mulligan is the top choice to take home the Oscar on Sunday, with her odds down at 7/2 in the Gold Derby.

In this thriller she stars as Cassandra "Cassie" Thomas who seeks revenge after the death of her best friend, a victim of rape.

For her “demurely brilliant” five star performance spoken of by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian, Mulligan won a Critics’ Choice Award, and was honoured with nominations for the SAG Awards and Golden Globes.
