Daniel Kaluuya delivered one of the most memorable speech of this year's Oscars – and the world got to watch his mother react in real time.

Kaluuya won the Best Supporting Actor prize at the ceremony for his role as civil rights activist Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah.

He thanked God and his family as he took to the stage, and paid tribute to how much Hampton managed to achieve in the 21 years he was alive.

Kaluuya then turned heads as he blurted out: "My mum and my dad had sex, and I’m here, it’s amazing."

Dutifully, the Academy broadcast cut to Kaluuya's mother and sister watching the show from the BFI in London – and looking rather unimpressed by his comments.

Naturally, Kaluuya was quizzed about his spur-of-the-moment comment in the press room after he left the stage, telling The Hollywood Reporter the words "just came out of my mouth".

He said: "My mum is probably going to text me. I really shouldn’t have said that. I am trying to avoid my phone for a bit.

"She is not going to be very happy. She has a great sense of humour. She is going to be cool."

Whatever Kaluuya's mother thinks of his comment, viewers of the Oscars broadcast have decided it will go down in history as one of the most memorable acceptance speeches of all time.

Judas And The Black Messiah was nominated six times at the Oscars, with Kaluuya beating his own co-star Lakeith Stanfield in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The film was also shortlisted for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Praising Hampton as he accepted the award, Kaluuya said: "What a man. How blessed we are that we lived in a lifetime where he existed.

"When they played divide and conquer, we say unite and ascend.”

Fortunately for Kaluuya, he was able to attend the Oscars ceremony in person and so there was no repeat of the technical problems that affected his speech at the Golden Globes earlier this year.

The Oscars were handed out at multiple venues in Los Angeles due to the impact of the COVID pandemic, as well as at satellite locations all around the world.
