All you need to know about J-Law’s new comedy
Jennifer Lawrence and the creative brains behind some of the best episodes of The US Office are hoping to bring big, raunchy comedies back into cinemas with No Hard Feelings.
Co-written and directed by Gene Stupnitsky, the writer-director behind big-screen comedies Year One and Bad Teacher and writer on Steve Carrell’s The Office between seasons two and six (plus the hilarious new series Jury Duty), No Hard Feelings looks set to finally punctuate cinema’s abundance of superhero spandex with a heady dose of humour.

No Hard Feelings plot
The premise for No Hard Feelings feels just odd enough to work and perfect for a big studio comedy. However, what makes it even more appealing is that it’s reportedly based on a true story.
In the film, Lawrence plays Maddie, a cash-strapped Uber driver who’s facing financial ruin after her car is impounded. Desperate, she begins looking for any form of new work and stumbles upon an unusual vocation in the process.
Heading to the listing site Craigslist, Maddie discovers a job advertisement posted by a pair of concerned parents who are worried about their painfully introverted 19-year-old son. With young Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) showing no interest in sex or even pursuing the opposite gender, they decide to hire Maddie as his surrogate girlfriend to help lure him out of his shell.
According to Stupnitsky, this is something that actually happened in real life, with the advertisement actually appearing on Craigslist.
“I read it, and I thought, 'This is wild. Who is the woman that answers this ad?' And I thought, 'Oh, that'll be a great role for my friend Jennifer Lawrence,” he told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, explaining that he was sent the advert by a mutual pal.
It didn’t take long for Stupnitsky to share the concept with his long-time friend Lawrence, who was immediately hooked: "Gene read the Craigslist ad to me, and I died laughing," she told the same outlet.

"I thought it was hilarious, but there wasn't a script or anything. I just thought he had a funny idea. And then a couple years later, he handed me the funniest script I've ever read in my life."
According to the film’s official synopsis (and its red band trailer), unlocking Percy’s libido — and saving herself from bankruptcy — proves trickier than first expected for Maddie.
“Awkward Percy proves to be more of a challenge than she expected, and time is running out. She has one summer to make him a man or lose it all.”
No Hard Feelings cast
Leading the way is Lawrence as the quick-witted, no-BS Maddie, with A Tourist’s Guide To Love star Barth Feldman joining her as the sexually repressed teen Percy.
Together, they’re accompanied by Gypsy star Laura Benanti as Percy’s mother and Matthew Broderick as Percy’s father, complete with a wig that has to be seen to be believed.
Elsewhere, Natalie Morales or Wall Street: Money Never Dies and The Mick’s Scott MacArthur star as Maddie’s pals, with The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Moooney and The Morning Show’s Hasan Minhaj also due to appear.
No Hard Feelings trailer
"Hi, mind if I touch your wiener?" purrs Lawrence in the first trailer for No Hard Feelings, setting the tone perfectly for the type of sexually-charged humour that's lurking in this new comedy.
Stupnitsky doubles down on this raunchy brand of gags in the film's sweary red band trailer, featuring more laugh-out-loud moments - and more of Broderick's wig.
No Hard Feelings is released on Wednesday, 21 June.
