Nicolas Cage's Longlegs has set an impressive new record with its box-office debut.

The horror mystery opened with $22.6 million at the US box office, significantly outperforming rom-c0m Fly Me to the Moon.

The debut figure has broken records for distributor Neon, as its biggest opening weekend in the US. After acquiring the movie for under $10 million, Neon spent around the same amount on marketing and distribution.

"This has been a really wild ride," said Elissa Federoff, Neon's chief distribution officer (via Variety). "Working with the film's creative team, we have been able to put together something really special.

"When you start with a film as wholly original as this one and you combine it with a fully fleshed out, bespoke marketing campaign, you can achieve something extraordinary."

The movie sees Nicolas Cage play Longlegs, a serial killer who is being pursued by FBI agent Lee Harker (played by It Follows' Maika Monroe).

"As the investigation becomes more complicated with occult evidence uncovered, Harker realises a personal link to the killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder," reads the synopsis.

The viral marketing campaign included a "90s-style website" that highlighted the gruesome crimes of Longlegs. The website featured a phone number that people could call to hear a sinister message from Cage's character.

Arriving in cinemas earlier this week, Longlegs received a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, which has since fallen to a respectable 87%.

Digital Spy's review called Longlegs: "not just one of 2024's best horror movies, but one of the year's best movies overall." Adding: "You are not ready for the unforgettable and chilling experience that is Longlegs."

Longlegs is out now in cinemas.
