Inside Out 2 takes unexpected inspiration from an Pixar

Inside Out 2’s director of layout photography Adam Habib has revealed a very unexpected detail about the sequel’s inspiration.

The anticipated follow-up to the 2015 Pixar film will once again focus on the emotions of Riley, though Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust must now contend with some new emotions – including Anxiety, Ennui, Envy and Embarrassment – as Riley navigates her teen years.

Speaking with Animation Magazine, Habib revealed that some of Inside Out 2's visuals take inspiration from Adam Sandler’s 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems, with the film’s use of shaky cinematography influencing the emotion of Anxiety as she takes over the control panel in Riley’s head.

This approach was adapted by building static sets during production and placing the digital characters inside them.

"Then they put a virtual camera that could be used like a camera for a live-action film inside the sets," the article continues.

"Once this was done, they would move the virtual camera around the sets they’d made to try out new angles and shot setups to see what would work best for the movie."

Inside Out 2 will see the return of Amy Poehler as Joy, along with Phyllis Smith as Sadness and Lewis Black as Anger. Fear and Disgust – who were played by Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling in the first film – are now voiced by Tony Hale and Liza Lapira.

The original five emotions are joined by Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), while other new characters include Nostalgia (June Squibb) and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! winner Sam Thompson as Security Man Sam.

The official synopsis reads: "Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions!

"Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren't sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she's not alone."

Inside Out 2 will be released in cinemas on June 14, 2024.
