The most popular Netflix releases in the UK for 2019

As the tumultuous year of 2019 draws to a close, streaming giant Netflix has offered up its own end-of-year wrap-ups, detailing which releases came out top around the world.

While they have released rankings, as is typical for the platform, the actual viewing figures haven’t been revealed.

Deadline reports it is likely the methodology used by Netflix to determine the rankings takes the number of accounts choosing to watch at least two minutes of a series, movie or special during its first 28 days on Netflix. Those two-minutes watched are then used to ascertain what is popular among viewers.

For UK viewers, the most-watched show of the year is perhaps unsurprising consider it is centred around one of the most high-profile missing person cases in The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Michael Bay's action thriller film 6 Underground came in second place, an impressive feat considering it was only released in mid-December.

The same can be said of The Witcher, which dropped on 20 December and enters fourth on the list behind US comedy film Murder Mystery.

UK series' After Life, Our Planet and Sex Education made the top 10, but came in after Martin Scorsese's much-hyped film The Irishman.

Finally, true crime made the list once more as Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes rounds off the top 10.

However, there is one notable absence in the list as lauded historical series The Crown didn't make the cut despite being one of Netflix’s flagships shows.

The first episode of the series was also made viewable for free for those without a Netflix account, but it clearly wasn’t enough to edge it into the most watched releases.
