Morbius suffers second worst box office drop ever for a superhero film

Morbius has suffered a huge drop-off in its second week box office performance.

While debuting in North America to a respectable $39m, the Jared Leto-starring film suffered a second week drop of 74 per cent domestically, taking in only just over $10m.

The drop-off represents the second worst fall in superhero movie history, only behind 1997's Steel which starred Shaquille O'Neal.

While Steel only had a budget of $16m, Morbius cost around $75m to produce and its box-office returns have been below other superhero flops such as Dark Phoenix, Fantastic Four and Catwoman.

In the UK, Morbius grossed £734,000 in its second weekend, down 71% on its opening weekend of £2.5m.

Set in the same movie universe as Spider-Man and Venom, Morbius' domestic US takings won't even come close to the opening week totals of any of the the other films in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

The latest Venom movie debuted to over $90m while Spider-Man: No Way Home had the second highest opening of all time for a December release, taking $260m over three days, and has gone on to become the ninth highest grosser in history.

Morbius has also received dire reviews and sits at only 16 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has been criticised for its poor special effects, uninspired writing and Leto's poor performance which was negatively compared to Tom Hardy's in Venom.

Particular criticism was also aimed at the film's mid-credits sequence which features the return of Michael Keaton as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. It was slated as "fan service", "confusing" and "poorly mapped out".

Despite the poor reviews and lacklustre box-office receipts, Leto and Marvel have expressed interest in the character crossing over with others in the comic universe.

Leto has said he would be keen to appear in a film with Blade who will be played by Mahershala Ali in the upcoming reboot.

Leto has also expressed interest in appearing alongside Hardy in a Morbius/Venom crossover.

Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, has also admitted he would like to fight Leto's Morbius in a future film.

Morbius also stars Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson and Jared Harris.
