Mindy Kaling calls 'Legally Blonde' iconic, says writing the sequel is nerve-wracking
Mindy Kaling has provided an update on Legally Blonde 3, the long-touted sequel to the beloved Reese Witherspoon comedies that she is currently writing for the Oscar-winning actress.
Kaling took to Instagram back in May to reveal that she was working on Legally Blonde 3 with Witherspoon, producer Lauren Levy Nedstadter, and writer Dan Goor, calling the main character Elle Woods “iconic,” and someone who proves that “you can be girly and smart at the same time.”

During her recent appearance on Good Morning America, the 41-year-old writer and star of The Mindy Project was quizzed about how she became involved in the project.

“I'd been working with her on a couple of movies and we've been friends for a while,” Kaling said of Witherspoon, who she starred with in 2018’s A Wrinkle In Time.
Kaling says that she has spent a lot of their friendship just quoting Witherspoon’s movies back at her. Even though she knew that she was being “that annoying friend that would be like, ‘Bend and snap,’ to her,” it ultimately lead Witherspoon to tell Kaling, “You know, I’d really love to revisit this character.”

Kaling was originally very apprehensive and nervous about doing so, though, because Legally Blonde is “so iconic.” But after some thought, Kaling realised, “It’d be really fun to see that character in her ‘40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?”
So now Kaling is writing Legally Blonde 3 alongside her friend Dan [Goor], a process that she calls “really funny,” before then adding, “It’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”
