Michael Fassbender joins Taika Waititi’s football film 'Next Goal Wins'

Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender has joined Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins.

Waititi has already signed up to oversee Next Goal Wins for Fox Searchlight, which, according to Variety, he has written alongside the co-creator of The Inbetweeners Iain Morris and is based on the the 2014 documentary of the same name.

Next Goal Wins revolves around the true story of Thomas Rongen, a Dutch football coach that took over the American Samoa football team back in 2011.

Before Rongen, American Samoa had never won a competitive football match. They even lost 31-0 to Australia back in 2001, the heaviest defeat in international history. American Samoa finally won their first match in November, 2011, when they beat Tonga. The documentary received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and even has a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Next Goal Wins is being produced by Garrett Basch for Fox Searchlight, while Jonathan Cavendish and Andy Serkis are also producing as are Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, the latter of whom directed the original documentary.

Waititi will actually shoot Next Goal Wins before he starts work on Thor: Love And Thunder, the follow-up to his Marvel smash-hit Thor: Ragnarok, which he is expected to start production on towards the start of 2020.

Thor: Love And Thunder, which will see Natalie Portman return as Jane Foster and portray a female version of Thor, is due out on November 5, 2021. We’re still waiting for a confirmed release date for Next Goal Wins.

Waititi has a very busy couple of months ahead, as James Gunn took to Twitter on Friday to confirm that the filmmaker will also be appearing in The Suicide Squad, too.
